Summary
From the Hugo Award–winning and New York Times bestselling author of the Expanse, James S. A. Corey, comes the start of a monumental new space opera series.
HOW HUMANITY CAME TO THE PLANET CALLED ANJIIN IS LOST IN THE FOG OF HISTORY, BUT THAT HISTORY IS ABOUT TO END.
The Carryx—part empire, part hive—has waged wars of conquest for centuries, destroying or enslaving species across the galaxy in its conflict with an ancient and deathless enemy.
When they descend on the isolated world of Anjiin, the human population is abased, slaughtered, and put in chains. The best and brightest are abducted, taken to the Carryx world-palace to join prisoners from a thousand other species.
Dafyd Alkhor, assistant to a prestigious scientist, is captured along with his team.
Even he doesn’t suspect that his peculiar insight and skills will be the key to seeing past their captors’ terrifying agenda.
Swept up in a conflict beyond his control and vaster than his imagination, Dafyd is poised to become humanity’s champion—and its betrayer.
This is where his story begins.
“No one builds a universe like James S. A. Corey. The Mercy of Gods is wilder and weirder than you can imagine, and when it ends, all you’ll want is … more.”—John Scalzi, New York Times bestselling author

Masterfully written, character driven, political sci-fi.
Very few authors write like Corey, I loved the Expanse and this does not disappoint. So many little throw away gems, the scene in the theatre where the researchers early on is a study in scene design, so elegant in it's simplicity it would take a master to get right. I thoroughly enjoyed this Audio book. I want to get it on my scribe now so I can annotate it and keep notes. Hope you enjoy it as much as I did.

Very enjoyable sci-fi
Very good start to the new series, was a great fan of the Expanse series. It's the kind if scifi found in books like the Saints of Salvation if that's what you're looking for.

Markedly different to the expanse, but that’s a strength
More surreal and bizarre than the Expanse so was a little bit of an adjustment but once I relaxed my expectations I came to very much appreciate this - felt more like an early Iain M Banks culture novel in all the right ways.

Binged
The only problem with this is that I binged it in a very short period of time and now I’ll have to wait I don’t know how long for the next part.

Great writing and voice acting.
Phenomenal new vision from the fantastic James SA Corey. Having loved The Expanse so much, I yearned for more and this is perfection. Jefferson Mays is excellent as ever. Cannot wait for the rest of the story to come!

Complex characters with a deep sense of reality, despite the alien setting.
The Expanse writers are back with a vastly different series. Bit the politics, darkness and depth remain. I will look forward to book 2.

Great storytelling
This is a serious step up from the Expanse. It's conceptually gorgeous, with world building on a par with Iain Banks at his best. The large cast of characters are plump with detail, believable, and fully developed. The story is breathtakingly brilliant, and emotionally ripe; and the writing beautiful, full of involving description and clever, interesting dialogue. The twist, even though it is heavily foreshadowed is superbly implemented. I felt like I was in the hands of master storytellers.
The narration is good, but sometimes a bit on the nose. Jefferson Mays suits the story though and I couldn't imagine another voice actor taking his place.
