About this listen

This is DC Smith's third investigation with the Diver and Diver Associates agency. They have been asked by a member of Norfolk's aristocracy to look into the tragic death of her younger brother, Freddie, the late Lord Thorpe of the title. The inquest verdict was of misadventure, but it isn't long before Smith begins to suspect there has been a serious miscarriage of justice.

I came late to this series late so I’ve had the luxury of listening to them all in fairly quick succession without having to wait for the next … now I’m at the end and regrettably having to wait for the next instalment 😔. I like each individual story but overall I’m invested in the characters … I was concerned that the transition from Police to Private Detective would be tricky but seamless and believable. The narration is also brilliant… please don’t ever change them!

I do hope this team (Jackson and Grainger) go on forever … it is a deep comfort to listen to these books, a great pleasure. Well written and beautifully read. Could do without the product placements.

I feel I know these characters so well now.

Another master piece

This is an investigation novel and a mystery. The procedures are realistic and keep you guessing. The characters are incredible but read the preceding ones first. The narrator may be the best I've encountered. But the most impressive thing about this story is the love and compassion, truly rare in this type of story.

have read all the books on DC Smith, as a policeman and as an investigater, and have loved every one, the story lines are all different, but the narrator, the dry sense of humour,and all other characters are still the same, these are the most welcoming part of these books, please keep them coming

As always Peter writes a great story and it’s bought to life with Gildart’s narration. I’m very relieved Gildart continues to narrate these stories as I’d hate for him to meet a tricky end lol! You need to listen to this story to know what it alludes to. Great listen, thank you.

I loved this book, one of my favourite in the series. DC does his usual understated detecting in a story that appears straight forward at the beginning , but of course it never is!
