About this listen

Everything has changed for Dr Ruth Galloway.

She has a new job, home and partner and is no longer North Norfolk police's resident forensic archaeologist. That is, until convicted murderer Amyas March offers to make DCI Nelson a deal. Nelson was always sure that March killed more women than he was charged with. Now March confirms this and offers to show Nelson where the other bodies are buried - but only if Ruth will do the digging.

Curious, but wary, Ruth agrees. March tells Ruth that he killed four more women and that their bodies are buried near a village bordering the fens, said to be haunted by the Lantern Men, mysterious figures holding lights that lure travellers to their deaths.

Is Amyas March himself a lantern man, luring Ruth back to Norfolk? What is his plan, and why is she so crucial to it? And are the killings really over?

Critic reviews

"My favourite current series." (Val McDermid)

I have had to make myself overcome the female narrator’s portrayal of Nelson in order to listen rather than read the books, most of which I have preferred to read in print. The voice just doesn’t sound right to me. I would have thought that a man would make a better job of it as for some reason they make a better job of women’s voices too. Picky I know, but given the popularity of the books, I would have thought they warrant a better narration. I still enjoy the stories though.

Another good Ruth Galloway follow on

I've read all the Ruth Galloway Mysteries and most are good, but some are slightly disappointing. This one seemed rather 'samey' despite the author moving the main character to Cambridge to try and add a bit of variety. I do wish Jane McDowell could manage a proper Norfolk accent rather than the standard 'country bumpkin'. The Ruth/Nelson relationship continues to enthral though!!

Entertaining but rather 'samey'

I've read/listened to all the Dr Ruth Galloway novels and enjoyed them immensely. Characters you can engage and identify with; skillfully designed plots and endings which leave you begging for the next installment. Can't wait for the next book in the series.

Bittersweet ending

I love the characters Elly creates. And the way her books grow with them. In my opinion this is the best one to date.
