About this listen

On the anniversary of his father’s passing, Jon leaves home in search of answers. The land is full of mystery and intrigue, and Jon wants to explore it all with the dream of one day becoming a sorcerer. But when Jon receives an invite to the castle for training, he starts to believe there has to be a catch.

A long time ago, Jon’s father was once a guard near the capital city. Now Jon finds himself back where his father used to work, and he’s beginning to learn why his father had wanted to raise him away from here. He will discover that, along with certain threats to the kingdom, there are also many magical arts to learn. Some seem stronger than others, but all have their use. Jon must come to understand the complexities of sorcery as he uncovers the mysteries and threats to the kingdom. But he also must learn to deal with the other sorcerers who have come to train at the castle at the same time as him...some of whom are hard to trust.

I have to admit to being a Simon Vance fan. He brings a story alive.

Spellbinding, engaging and evocative

To explain the title in bit more detail: The King's Sorcerer is classic fantasy story with an imaginative magic system,a main character who's likable, has clearly defined strengths and weaknesses and the supporting cast of characters is also quite interesting.

The best word to describe this book is cozy. Any fantasy fan will feel right at home with this one and Simon Vance is an absolutely perfect narrator for a book series about wizards. The book is extremely easy to follow, both because of the narrator and the overall writing style, which is a great bonus because I've actually had to return couple of audiobooks because I just had no idea what was going on because something about how the book was written kept throwing me off so I had to keep restarting them after listening for an hour or so.

It's a perfect book series to get into once you've listened to one too many Brandon Sanderson novel and need to take a break from his work and listen to something easy to understand and just relax.

I don't give stories 5 stars unless they make me jump out of my socks by their brilliance, even though everyone else on this website seems to hand out 5 star reviews just because they thought something was ''pretty good''.

In my mind 4/5 is a superb book and this is exactly that.

Exactly the kind of Book I've been looking for

Good story and characters, super magic system for listeners to get into the mechanics of. I like the main character, his morals and rationale when thinking seems natural and not forced. I had started to feel John was a little too good at everything and was surprised that as many characters survived till the end but overall still enjoyed the book and looking forward to the next one

Good story

Moved from AC Cobbles series to this one and was really pleased I did. Great characters and world building. The description of how the magic works is extremely creative and the whole story moves along at a good pace. A really good read, I can't wait for next adventure 👏👏👏

Great series

I thoroughly enjoyed this book, but to start with I was getting a little tired of all the spell examples. However once the story expanded , the explanations became useful and informative. I look forward to hearing more adventures. As always the narrator was awesome.

Magic spells galore

I tend to buy long books, but have been buying the audible version of kindle unlimited books to save credits. This was one of them and runs to 12 hours. I like Simon Vance who does great job as always and this is the first book I've experienced from this author and is the first in his most recent series. I have really enjoyed it from the ingenious magic system to the lore and characters. The author is a skilled story teller and this is an easy enjoyable listen but none the less for it. I was late to the Narro party but delighted to have found him and his considerable body of work which I will continue through in the coming months. I cringe at labels in fantasy but would recommend this introduction to the Jon Oklar series to all.

A real gem
