About this listen

Strong-willed and full of hope, Leo strives to learn more of the magic he has read so much about. He's heard of invisible links in his world, and hidden rifts to other realms filled with creatures and stones of power. But Leo's family is stuck in an impoverished city. He performs backbreaking farm work beside his older brother, a rebellious and cunning thief, but nonetheless a brother whom Leo would trust with his life. Their father takes care of them as best he can, but a dangerous secret has weighed heavily on him for years. He won't be able to keep it hidden much longer.

Leo believes everything will change for the better when he begins work as a bookbinder and finally leaves the dreadful farm. He can apply for apprenticeship to the Bookbinding Guild upon his soon-approaching birthday.

Everything will change, but in ways their family would never expect. It all begins when Leo's brother steals something that he should've left alone.

Slow

Very slow paced. Interesting setup but boy, it was really dragged out. The pace may pick up later in the series but this is where I think I will leave it.
Narrator is excellent as usual.

Great fantasy tale

Generally a good story, easy to invest in the characters and to follow. Part one of three.

A gem for a freebie

Nicely written, characters well developing. Not many surprises, as it is a classic fantasy saga, with boys coming of age, monsters, injustice, fights and so on... Off to the next one. Narration is ok. I understand Simon Vance is a favourite by many, but I never managed to like him. Even if this one is one of his best narrations, not overdramatized, which is usually his signature.

Good set up for the rest of the series

This whole book is a set up for what’s going to happen in the rest of the series. Normally that would annoy me but it stands up well enough as a novel in its own right. I’ll be reading more.

Amazing

pretty excited to find out there's still another three books to go 🤟 takes me out of my normal day and puts me in third person perspective, witnessing a movie unfold in my mind 👊

Exiting story and descriptive writing

It was a very good story, well written and it drew the listener in,,so you cared about the characters. The narrator was also very good, but at times the various voices he used were too similar . Could have done with two narrators.

Great start to series

As with the other books in this series its good storytelling but feels like books 1 and 2 could have been in one volume

the book is for the children

I don't understand why this book was recommended to me, when there's Nothing romantic or thrilling in this book! what a waste of my time and money!!! it should be in children's or young adults fantasy department! very annoyed! or though writing in performance is very good.

Slow going for at least half or more

Narrator excellent, story a bit slow to begin with then when you’re near the point of no return it suddenly picks up, almost as the author has had a inspiration
