About this listen

Brought to you by Penguin.

A stunning new standalone thriller from the author of the best-selling Harry Hole series.

In the far north of Norway a man lives a peaceful existence. However, one day his younger brother, always the more successful and charming of the two, turns up to visit, accompanied by his new wife. It soon turns out that the little brother is not quite as angelic as he seems.

Set in a small town filled with secrets, this compellingly dark thriller from the Sunday Times number one best seller has a plot as explosive and multi-layered as any of the Harry Hole novels.

Jo Nesbo has sold over 45 million books worldwide.

Critic reviews

The Kingdom is a stunning novel from a storyteller with few equals (Jon Coates)

The writer and the narrator are both top drawer. The 17 hours of audio never lets up, but I had to give it long pauses as the depths that Nesbo goes into the darkness of these folk up in the mountains is quite a sucker punch and I needed some oxygen. Still recommend it highly. It’s certainly not Georgette Heyer.

Polished Nordic grimness

It took me a while to get into this, but when I did it was thoroughly absorbing. A dark and brooding story line set in rural Norway. Sean Barrett is perfect as narrator. Probably a touch longer than necessary but that's my only minor gripe.

Dark and brooding Scandi Noir

An intricate story told by the killer and the tragic background of the brothers that led to the murders. A slow explanatory start. The narrator's voice was at times too deep, too resonant, and this spoilt the listening at times, especially the lengthy passages read in a severely bass monotone voice. Apart from that another excellent Nordic noir.

Good story - questionable narrator

I had no expectations when I started this book, and for a bit, I thought the marvellous narrator would have to pull me through. But the author drew me in with subtle hints, well-rounded characters and one unexpected development after another.

Awesome story with equally awesome narrator

I couldn’t finish this book . I Found it too depressing the way it was heading

Too dark for me

First time I’ve moved from Harry Hole but it was a good story and worth a listen with nothing too predictable

Definitely enjoyed it

Really surprised to read some of the negative reviews on this. They must have been listening to a different book.
Long but fast paced and just a really gripping tale that had me hooked to the end. I thought the ending was just perfect and didn’t see it coming in the classic nesbo way. As always flourless narration from Barrett. Sad when it was over

Huge Nesbo fan and I rate this as his best yet

Another really great book from Jo Nesbo. Very different pace and feel to the Harry Hole series, more reminiscence of Head Hunters.
An interesting plot that is never predictable, but there is a sombre feel to the whole book which ventures into some pretty dark places making for a difficult listen at times.

I can see some of the Harry Hole fan club won't like this one, but personally I think this is one of his best. Just not much of a 'pleaser'.

Sean Barrett's narration is brilliant as always.

A fantastic but dark listen.

Sean Barrett makes anything sound good.
I enjoyed the story. Interesting to hear something by Jo Nesbo that wasn't Harry Hole.

A good listen

thought the book was stretched out too far to make it one of his best. it was very well performed as a audio book

Good but not great
