Shortlisted for the Women’s Prize 2022

A Reese Witherspoon Book Club pick.

A top 10 Sunday Times best seller.

Shortlisted for the Costa Novel Award 2021.

A rich, magical new novel from the Booker-shortlisted author of 10 Minutes 38 Seconds in this Strange World.

Two teenagers, a Greek Cypriot and a Turkish Cypriot, meet at a taverna on the island they both call home. The taverna is the only place that Kostas and Defne can meet in secret, hidden beneath the blackened beams from which hang garlands of garlic and chilli peppers, creeping honeysuckle, and in the centre, growing through a cavity in the roof, a fig tree. The fig tree witnesses their hushed, happy meetings; their silent, surreptitious departures. The fig tree is there, too, when war breaks out, when the capital is reduced to ashes and rubble, when the teenagers vanish. Decades later, Kostas returns—a botanist, looking for native species—looking, really, for Defne. The two lovers return to the taverna to take a clipping from the fig tree and smuggle it into their suitcase, bound for London. Years later, the fig tree in the garden is their daughter Ada's only knowledge of a home she has never visited, as she seeks to untangle years of secrets and silence, and find her place in the world.

The Island of Missing Trees is a rich, magical tale of belonging and identity, love and trauma, nature and renewal, from the Booker-shortlisted author of 10 Minutes 38 Seconds in this Strange World.

toy story for the botanical world

I really enjoyed this. it took me a chapter or to to understand the fig tree was a narrator but once I did I loved those parts. the narration was a bit odd at times, I mistook the accent for Irish every so often. I think the relationship with Ada wasn't developed as well as it could have been, but the story is historical, and based around nature and relationships between us all.

Loved it

The charm of stories I enjoyed as a child with a grown up plot. Delicately handled political and other issues. I enjoyed this as an Audio book probably more than if I had read it as sometimes books which swap narrator are annoying to read, however the narrator's different accents helped make this part of its joy. A lovely story to have read to you.

beautiful and thoughtful

loved it and thought the narration was brilliant. complex cast of characters thoughtfully presented. the weaving of themes and use of both ancient and modern myths is skillful.

Taken far away every time I listened

A tale of love, loss, youth and trees, beautifully told in a melodic way. I was transported to the island and feel like I have sat in the tavern. Loved it!

Great story. Poor production

I loved this story, but found the narration very difficult to hear. It sounded like the person was reading too near the microphone so it had a muffled quality. I thought the accents were good. That again the narrators could have done with some technical skills of using the microphone to make it more relaxing to listen to.

5 star all the way

I read and listened to this beautiful book. The narration and accents brought the characters to life and truly was sublime to listen to.
The story switches between timelines and I loved the language, descriptions and insight into some of the history of Cyprus but also fascinating insights into wildlife and trees. Heartwarming and I'll definitely listen to this book again.

Excellent storytelling

A beautiful love story told from an unusual point of view, with recent Cypriot history added in. Would recommend, especially for discussion at a book club.
