About this listen

Young Elly's world is shaped by those who inhabit it: her loving but maddeningly distractible parents; a best friend who smells of chips and knows exotic words like 'slag'; an ageing fop who tapdances his way into her home, a Shirley Bassey impersonator who trails close behind; lastly, of course, a rabbit called God. In a childhood peppered with moments both ordinary and extraordinary, Elly's one constant is her brother Joe.

Twenty years on, Elly and Joe are fully grown and as close as they ever were. Until, that is, one bright morning and a single earth-shattering event that threatens to destroy their bond for ever.

Spanning four decades and moving between suburban Essex, the wild coast of Cornwall and the streets of New York, this is a story about childhood, eccentricity, the darker side of love and sex, the pull and power of family ties, loss and life. More than anything, it's a story about love in all its forms.

A quirky story that I nearly gave up on a couple of times, but so glad I stuck with it. Sadness and laughter as you journey through life with the family. The narration really brought this story to life.

One of the best narrated audio books

Loved this story. Still Life was wonderful and this is more melancholy but still wonderful characters you fall in love with. Just so refreshing to have such an original story and main players. Loved it

Really enjoy her story telling. Nicely observed across the ages of all her characters. Can be touch and go with actors reading books but as the author she’s brilliant at narrating and makes for a really engaging listen.

Always enjoy her books & story telling

The descriptions where excellent - clear and to the point whilst being necessary to bring the story to life.
I really liked the unexpected nature of the journey through the story and how the life experience’s, of each character impacted on each persons development as they aged.

if I'd read this first I'd love it unequivocally but as I listened to still life first this in comparison is not quite as good. its marginal though.

Brilliantly narrated by the author. I flitted between audible and kindle and winman’s narration was far better than my own. Some parts and I read and then listened to and the other way round. I’ll likely read it again. Sad it’s over

Heartbreaking, heartwarming, gritty and full of love
