About this listen
From eldest daughter Shari Franke, the shocking true story behind the viral 8 Passengers family vlog – now the subject of a new Disney+ docuseries – and the hidden abuse she suffered at the hands of her mother, and how, in the face of unimaginable pain, she found freedom and healing.
Shari Franke’s childhood was a constant battle for survival. Her mother, Ruby Franke, enforced a severe moral code while maintaining a façade of a picture-perfect family for their wildly popular YouTube channel 8 Passengers, which documented the day-to-day life of raising six children for a staggering 2.5 million subscribers. But a darker truth lurked beneath the surface – Ruby’s wholesome online persona masked a more tyrannical parenting style than anyone could have imagined.
As the family’s YouTube notoriety grew, so too did Ruby’s delusions of righteousness. Fueled by the sadistic influence of relationship coach Jodi Hildebrandt, together they implemented an inhumane and merciless disciplinary regime.
Ruby and Jodi were arrested in Utah in 2023 on multiple charges of aggravated child abuse. On that fateful day, Shari shared a photo online of a police car outside their home. Her caption had one word: 'Finally'.
For the first time, Shari will reveal the disturbing truth behind 8 Passengers and her family’s devastating involvement with Jodi Hildebrandt’s cultish life coaching program, 'ConneXions'. No stone is left unturned as Shari exposes the perils of influencer culture and shares for the first time her battle for truth and survival in the face of her mother’s cruelty.

Well written, well read, tragic story
With Shari at the door of her brothers door, armed with his favourite snacks and a letter. That got me. The pain this young woman must have felt is unfathomable. A compelling read. A tragic story. Wishing the Franke family years of peace, recovery and many moments of joy.

Heart breaking but beautiful
Thank you so much for sharing your story whilst keeping it respectful for the youngers! Knowing the truth after all the rumours that spread online is almost ‘comforting’ after following the family for so long. Shari you’re a brilliant writer thank you ❤️

Shari’s voice is filled with pain, love and power.
Hearing her story in her own words, in her own voice was incredibly impactful. Shari’s way of words was insurmountably beautiful, intelligent and emotionally powerful. I want to say so much more but I’m at loss for words. What an incredible young woman Shari is. Thank you for allowing us to hear your story and thoughts.

Brave
That’s the first word that comes to my mind when I think of Shari and her siblings and sharing her story really must have taken a lot, I wish her so much healing and joy in her life as I do her siblings. They are worthy of so much love that Ruby was too blinded by greed and selfishness to give them…really gave me a new insight into the family but not in the way I expected.

Respectfully told
I loved the way she told the story in a way that was so respectful to her siblings. They never had the chance to choose anonymity, they never had any privacy. Shari gave them that. I think this is an excellent example of the dangers of idolising people on social media, when all we really see are what they want us to see. Children are not content and they can’t consent to being exposed in such a way. The emotions really come through in her writing and telling of the story. She’s empathetic and respectful even to Ruby. I very much enjoyed the book.

Powerful Reclamation of Her Own Story
I feel at the end of this book like there is a lot of self reflection for us all who followed this family’s journey to do. Even those who only ever watched with concern, the level of popularity that the 8 Passengers gained and the part that we played in what happened is something we should reflect on in response to other families doing the same.
I cannot believe the number of people who have let this bright young passionate person down and I hope that she can find peace in her future. As I also hope that people reading this book can take from it what they should, whilst leaving the family and Shari herself alone. I think a big reason for their popularity was that people relate to Shari and her siblings’ experiences in one way or another, but instead of living in other people’s lives online we should do as Shari does and look after ourselves.
