Cornwall, Midsummer 1947. Pendizack Manor Hotel is buried in the rubble of a collapsed cliff. Seven guests have perished, but is it murder, and what brought this strange assembly together for a moonlit feast before this Act of God - or Man? Over the week before the landslide, we meet the hotel guests in all their eccentric glory: and as friendships form and romances blossom, sins are revealed, and the cliff cracks widen....

I liked this
Not bad at all. Of its time. Not a detective story. Reminds me a little of J B. Priestly. It’s true that the story ends with no accounting. However that is the point really. The falling cliff removes a set of characters and in doing so opens up a whole new world of possibilities for the people left behind.

Unusual and brilliant
A curious hybrid that embraces various genres. It’s very compelling and beautifully narrated. A metaphysical golden age morality tale. I loved it.

Definitely a book 'of the time'!
Considering the start of the book, it had a super twist at the end - no spoiler alert needed. Not quite historical but set just after the end of WW2. A strange tale with (to us) strange characters that my Dad would've recognised but they had some interestingly flawed personalities.

Long-winded so patience is required!
Briefly - the prologue of this title, excellently narrated by the brilliant Colin Mace, had me intrigued from the beginning and had me wanting to read on. It promised a mystery which never arrived, and sadly did not deliver as expected. I felt the abrupt ending required an epilogue, which also didn't arrive.

The Feast
Definitely recommend. A time gone by, old fashioned characters, but really enjoyed development of the characters and the narration. I was disappointed to reach the end of the book.

Thank goodness I stuck with it!
I struggled, in the very beginning, to get into this book, and almost gave up, what a relief I didn't! I thoroughly enjoyed it. The characters were fully fleshed out and intriguing, making for an excellent story, that had me listening at every spare minute!

Unbelievably dreary
If you are a fan of Agatha Christie or golden age detective fiction you'll be seriously disappointed. Agatha Christie and her ilk rip along, giving you twists and turns, and likeable characters. There's none of that here. Dreadfully miserable, dreary, people who are universally dislikeable, doing nothing but moan.

Dismal
Thank goodness the author of this book is no longer with us to hear what I thought of her book. Everyone in the book is depressing, depressed and quite awful! By the end I was begging the cliff to fall but then was left with a huge anticlimax. It just dragged on and on with people being miserable but when the cliff does us all a favour, there’s no follow up, no repercussions just many hours of listening wasted.
