About this listen

The groundbreaking guide to self-healing and getting the love you missed.

Was your mother preoccupied, distant, or even demeaning? Have you struggled with relationships - or with your own self-worth? Often, the grown children of emotionally absent mothers can't quite put a finger on what's missing from their lives. The children of abusive mothers, by contrast, may recognize the abuse - but overlook its lasting, harmful effects. Psychotherapist Jasmin Lee Cori has helped thousands of men and women heal the hidden wounds left by every kind of undermothering. In this second edition of her pioneering book, with compassion for mother and child alike, she explains:

  • Possible reasons your mother was distracted or hurtful - and what she was unable to give
  • The lasting impact of childhood emotional neglect and abuse
  • How to find the child inside you and fill the "mother gap" through reflections and exercises
  • How to secure a happier future for yourself (and perhaps for your children)

"This book is a revelation to those of us whose mothering was short of what we needed." (Connie Dawson, PhD, coauthor of Growing up Again)

I found this book very accessible and it answered a lot of questions I had about my upbringing. It has opened more doors of emotion than I expected but it also gives some very practical exercises to help. I'd definitely recommend this book if you're on your emotional journey of healing. Thank you

This book held answers for me

I have been working on this mother wound area for a long time. this book hits the mark so well. I feel it is a useful book no matter at what point of the journey a daughter is at. even just bringing the wound in to conscious awareness is healing. Also the validation of the book was really empowering to me, and the understanding we can heal without our mums taking an active role (or any role for that matter).

so helpful

If you are stuck and need to get clearer understanding in the process of coming to terms with mothering related issues/trauma. This might just help you get some clarity.

Deep and thoughtful

This book clarified so much for me, I would recommend to anyone who is at least wondering if they were brought up by such a parent. It made me look at my behaviour as a mother too. Lots of ideas on how to tackle the issues arising as a result, although anything severe will need therapy, as the book says.

Enlightening

I wish I found this book 10 years ago. It would have saved me from so much pain. I'm still a better person because of this book. Great insights. Thought provoking. Wonderful writing. Appreciate the authors examples and clear way of expressing the points. A pleasure to read and re-read

Amazing book. No other book needed on the subject

… sadly I learnt so much from this book and for many years thought my instincts were wrong. But now after much emotional turmoil I can move on and learn about how I can be my own mother. My belief was you were born and you raised yourself. I wonder if my own mother has Asperger’s. It’s brilliant and I’ll listen again. And I can’t wait to be my own best mum. Thank you x
