About this listen

September 1940. As the Blitz takes its nightly toll on London and Hitler prepares his invasion fleet just across the Channel in occupied France, Britain is full of talk about enemy agents. Suspicion is at an all-time high, and no one is sure who can be trusted.

In Canning Town, rescue workers are unsettled when they return to a damaged street and discover a body that shouldn’t be there. When closer examination of the corpse reveals death by strangling, Detective Inspector John Jago is called upon to investigate. But few seem to really care about the woman’s death - not even her family. As Jago digs deeper he starts to uncover a trail of deception, betrayal, and romantic entanglements....

I love crime stories, I discovered the first book ,the blitz detective, and I was hooked, the settings are real which I like, it gives my imagination something real to go by. the stories are very interesting and the narration was really good, he seemed to match how I expected the main character to sound. I cant wait for more in the series.

newly discovered this author, great writing

Simon Mattocks has brought these characters and story to life, I look forward to more.

Perfect performance.

I wasn’t entirely convinced by the first book, but glad I decided to try the second one. It’s like stepping into wartime London, learning a little about how it was to live in London during the blitz. The crime story was also very good, no doubt I’ll keep listening to this series!

Great wartime crime!

Got hooked on wartime stories with good old Bernie Gunther thence Scarrows Blackout thought I'd try the London experience and found it captivating. I feel I already have a picture of the black market "spivery" and the blitz of course but the other details Hollow drops in ,like the Police canteen and the hopeless bad design of the Anderson shelter add much to the richness of the narrative for me.
But I don't see the American journalist is adding much to the mix . We are told an Englishman takes time but this is what time Britain with the real threat of death stirring loins all over the sceptre isles come on man get your bag straight!

London noir?

Really enjoyed this book in will work my way through the series. Excellent historical details and a cracking good mystery . The narrator is also very good .

Love this series!

As someone who once plodded the beat in Canning Town and also worked in the original Scotland Yard I perhaps had a biased reason for finding this story so very enjoyable but even without this background I am sure that I would have thoroughly enjoyed this story.

It was so clearly read, really giving the impression that the speaker was recounting a true documentary account. This in no way detracted from my enjoyment. I seldom re-listen to books but this is one book I will listen to again and I am sure enjoy doing so even though I will know the ending.

If there was a fault it was that at times I became a little initially confused with the personel.

Enjoyed listening to this book the narrator is excellent ,easy to listen to and authentic accents abound. No spoilers ,basically it’s about one murder, bigamy and possible espionage .The story is nicely wrapped up at the end and our hero gets a step close to understanding his feelings.
the way he questions his feelings for a 40 year old man back then ,beggars belief I think that is not only fiction but probably fantasy ,however that’s why I like these stories.
Finally The main question I’m left with is will Sergent Craddock ever learn to eat properly ?

Another dose of wartime crime

I usually listen to more modern thriller/crime but with the great narration and storyline I could not stop listening and wanted it to never end - brilliant

Refreshingly Great

A finely plotted and thoroughly enjoyable episode in this marvellous historical series. Good to see our hero growing in depth.
