Summary

Once upon a time, in a land blighted by terror, there was a very clever boy.

The people thought the boy could save them, so they opened their gates and sent him out into the world.

To where the monsters lived.

In The Boy on the Bridge, M. R. Carey returns to the world of his phenomenal word-of-mouth best seller, The Girl With All the Gifts, for the very first time.

Well read

Not as good as the first book, but still worth a read. The main characters aren't as well developed and the ending is somewhat sickly sweet.

Beautiful and full of dark hope

M.R.Carey is a wonderful writer, each book is complete, the marriage makes both books into transcendent whole. Both must be read in order, both are uncompromisingly, fascinating from start to finish, without sentimentality but full to the brim with feeling.

Easily as good as The Girl With All the Gifts.

Simply put if you enjoyed The Girl With All the Gifts, you will probably enjoy this. It's got great characters and an interesting story and I loved the ending. Finty Williams narrates on this one too and is as excellent as she was on the first book. I'm not going to say much about the story, but do not read this without reading The Girl with all the Gifts first, as it will detract from some elements of the story. I might even prefer this book, a strong 4 out of 5 from me.

Great listen!

I've really enjoyed all the books I've listened to by M R Carey. Additive listening and gutted it's come to an end. Great stuff!

Totally Absorbing

Well read, well written, an excellent post apoplectic tale, prequel and conclusion to the girl with all the gifts!

Very engrossing listen

Only complaint, and it's scarcely even that.. is the similarity of characters in this and 'The Girl with all the Gifts'. Mother figure protecting persecuted children, cantankerous soldiers, self - serving scientists who are more a danger to fellow humans than the hungries...Interesting characters nonetheless, all of which Finty Williams evokes clearly.

Thanks for another cracker!

Up front admission. I loved The Girl with all the Gifts so so much that I HAD to read this.

I wasn’t disappointed. The story has given me a bit of background and wrapped up nicely.
I actually cheered out loud (in my car, on my own, how embarrassing) at the ending :)

Great narration by Finty as usual. She is grand.

Outstanding

I read the Girl with all the gifts which was excellent and wondered how it could be followed. It is by the interesting device of having the sequel take place chronologically before. However, it works really well and just non stop excitement and intrigue. Extremely well written and brilliantly read by Finty Williams. One of the few readers I have actually bought books because she is the narrator. In summary, outstanding entertainment and highly recommended.
