About this listen

Random House presents the unabridged downloadable audiobook edition of The Bear and the Nightingale by Katherine Arden, read by Kathleen Gati.

A young woman's family is threatened by forces both real and fantastical in this debut novel inspired by Russian fairy tales.

In a village at the edge of the wilderness of Northern Russia, where the winds blow cold and the snow falls many months of the year, a stranger with piercing blue eyes presents a new father with a gift - a precious jewel on a delicate chain, intended for his young daughter. Uncertain of its meaning, the father hides the gift away, and his daughter, Vasya, grows up a wild, willful girl, to the chagrin of her family. But when mysterious forces threaten the happiness of their village, Vasya discovers that, armed only with the necklace, she may be the only one who can keep the darkness at bay.

Atmospheric and enchanting, with an engrossing adventure at its core, The Bear and the Nightingale is perfect for fans of Naomi Novik's Uprooted, Erin Morgenstern's The Night Circus and Neil Gaiman.

A coming of age story set in medieval Russia with magic.

This novel had passed under my radar, but I picked it up when it was on sale. Boy am I glad I did, it’s a wonderfully written fairy tale..just go and buy it.

I have really enjoyed both the story and the narration. It’s true that the characters speaking with a Russian accent is a little odd, but it is also obvious that there was no disrespect intended, rather, the intention seems to have been to add to the charm of the story. This enabled me to get used to it. Other than that, the narrator is among the most accomplished that I have heard, her US accent is soft, not like the kind that I personally find difficult to listen to.
The story is wonderful, real magical realism that thrives in the atmospheric Russian wilderness.

Original and charming

A lovely captivating book. I struggled at times to put it down. I really liked the narration, I know some didn't. It's a great story based around folk stories and belief in God.

This series was great! So beautifully written and intriguing, I thought it was a very unique story. The narration was also excellent. Vasilisa is now one of my all time favourite heroines.
