Summary
In 1973 Jane Tennison, aged 22, leaves the Metropolitan Police Training Academy to be placed on probationary exercise in Hackney where criminality thrives. We witness her struggle to cope in a male-dominated, chauvinistic environment, learning fast to deal with shocking situations with no help or sympathy from her superiors. Then comes her involvement in her first murder case. No one witnessed the savage beating of a tragic young girl who, the post-mortem reveals,was pregnant when she died. The murder enquiry is soon running cold...

Good story
Enjoyed..narration could have been better, some accents left alot to be desired but good account of Tennisons early years...bought 2nd book already!

Took me back
It was good to go back in time to when Jane Tennison started her career. I thoroughly enjoyed this and look forward to listening to the others.

In the Begining
Lovely to meet that we’ll know character Jane Tennyson at the very start of her career. The action was fast and all linked up. The characters are well drawn, from the “greasy Greek” to the roughs of the housing estate to the various departments of the Met. Jane’s flair for forensics is born right in her probationary time. A great read

Really excellent
This was my first encounter with Linda La Plante's books, and after the pleasure of listening to Jane Tennison's back story, I'm officially hooked. The characters are interesting and the plotlines are cleverly thought out and well executed. The narration was perfect, and I have no complaints in that regard either.

a fantastic book
overall I really enjoyed this book, the story line had me hooked till the end. I will admit the accents were very dodgy especially the attempt at a Jamaican accent.
