Summary

From the Norman Invasion in 1066 to the eve of the First World War, Stick a Flag in It is a thousand-year jocular journey through the history of Britain and its global empire.

The British people have always been eccentric, occasionally ingenious and, sure, sometimes unhinged - from mad monarchs to mass-murdering lepers. Here, Arran Lomas shows us how they harnessed those traits to forge the British nation, and indeed the world, we know today. Follow history’s greatest adventurers from the swashbuckling waters of the Caribbean to the vast white wasteland of the Antarctic wilderness, like the British spy who infiltrated a top-secret Indian brothel and the priest who hid inside a wall but forgot to bring a packed lunch. At the very least you’ll discover Henry VIII’s favorite a*se-wipe, whether the flying alchemist ever made it from Scotland to France, and the connection between Victorian coffee houses and dildos.

Forget what you were taught in school - this is history like you’ve never heard it before, full of captivating historical quirks that will make you laugh out loud and scratch your head in disbelief.

A great introduction to British history

As a historian I would highly recommend this book to anyone, it is full of historical facts presented in a fun and engaging manner. Definitely ideal for teenagers despite the use of adult language, infact I would recommend it due to the ease at which it presented the information for a more relaxed audience.

Excellent audio book - well worth a listen

Followed the author for many years with his great YouTube videos. This is just a much longer version. Really enjoyed the audiobook. The detail is great, well read and the humour keeps you smiling. You’ve made me actually take Interest in our British history again and I can’t wait for you to release some more books/content. Keep up the great work.

Fantastic and Enthralling Journey

This book is absolutely bloody amazing. There is not a moment that I don't feel entirely gripped by the history that is presented by Arran, so much so I have consumed this audio book within a day and a half! The writing is witty and sprinkled with jokes that perfectly compliment the astounding and impressive adventures described in the book. I highly recommend this title to anyone who has any interest in Britain, history or in just having a good time.

I've always enjoyed history but this book looks at the more quirky and weird events of the UK's past.

Excellent Book

This is an incredibly interesting recount of a huge portion of England's history. As an Irishman, I was particularly interested in the Oliver Cromwell section. Very humorously narrated by the author. A must read, or listen, for history buffs.

Great intro to the history of the British isles.

I am not some one who wants to dive in to the depth of history and research every fact and figure to be found.
But this book is great for some one who wants a light hearted summary from the year 10,000 to current day.
there are many stories to highlight the main point and to plant seeds for you to investigate further.

I wish this is how I had been taught history in School. not so I remembered every date and name. but the over riding story of how our country came to be how it is. the good and the bad.

I won't give it 5 star but 4 stars js a great book not to be missed. 5 is reserved for the exceptional true master pieces.
