About this listen

Candid and brilliantly funny, this is the story of how a tall, shy youth from Weston-super-Mare went on to become a self-confessed legend.

En route, John Cleese describes his nerve-racking first public appearance, at St Peter's Preparatory School at the age of eight and five-sixths; his endlessly peripatetic homelife, with parents who seemed incapable of staying in any house for longer than six months; his first experiences in the world of work, as a teacher who knew nothing about the subjects he was expected to teach; his hamster-owning days at Cambridge; and his first encounter with the man who would be his writing partner for over two decades, Graham Chapman. And so on to his dizzying ascent via scriptwriting for Peter Sellers, David Frost, Marty Feldman and others to the heights of Monty Python.

Punctuated from time to time with John Cleese's thoughts on topics as diverse as the nature of comedy, the relative merits of cricket and waterskiing and the importance of knowing the dates of all the kings and queens of England, this is a masterly performance by a former schoolmaster.

One of the best listens imaginable, including several original recordings of sketches by some of the great masters of comedy. Wonderful to hear John Cleese describe his boyhood, his eccentric parents, his forays through formal education, and continually landing on his feet in the working world. Definitely worth sharing, this one!

Truly Comedic!

Absolutely essential for anybody who like John Cleese
or for that matter, the pythons too.
To be clear, there isn't a huge amount included specifically referring to the group as a whole but that only makes sense as it is after all John's personal journey up to and including his python years.
It is however quite fantastic though, as I felt, it really delved into what makes the man tick comedically and psychologically, which in turn only increased my appreciation for what he personally and together with the pythons produced through the years.
In conclusion, I highly recommend this Audio book to anybody, fan or not, who enjoys a good yarn and more then a few belly laughs.
Purchase with confidence and enjoy his story right from the "proverbial" horse's mouth(Sorry John!)^^

Excellent insight into a comic legend.

A wonderful 13 hours of listening to a brilliantly written and read book. Listening to an autobiography being read by the writer is simply amazing, well when it is John Cleese it is!

I enjoyed “So, Anyway” enormously. Scottish people don’t say that they enjoy things enormously very often so imagine me saying that in a Sean Connery Scottish accent and appreciate the rarity of the occasion. What a funny, interesting, touching and insightful listen it was. Mr Cleese manages to guide us through his life in a way that describes the importance of his contribution to tv and film comedy, and, I would argue, British culture, with humility, self-knowledge and passion. (I had to get that word in too.) I wouldn’t describe myself as a Python geek but John Cleese has grabbed my attention since I was a kid and I loved hearing his story in his own, inimitable voice. The outro with Michael Palin (British icons both) was just one part that made me laugh out loud. When John breaks into laughter himself, as he recalls certain memories, was infectious and made me laugh as I walked along the street with my headphones in on several occasions. I loved every minute of this book. What a legacy you have left Mr Cheese [sic] You may not believe in God, but you yourself recall a few occasions where you were given inexplicable opportunities to take your life in directions you never foresaw. Well I for one thank God for presenting these to you; but more so that you took them and chose the road less travelled which brought you to us through all those comedic moments on stage, tv, cinema and now audiobook. You are a real treasure, an honest voice and, actually, an all-round good egg Mr Cleese.

An absolute delight
