Summary
THE NEW NOVEL FROM THE INTERNATIONALLY BESTSELLING AUTHOR OF FOSTER, ANTARCTICA AND WALK THE BLUE FIELDS
'This is a tale of courage and compassion, of good sons and vulnerable young mothers. Absolutely beautiful.' -Douglas Stuart (Winner of the Booker Prize 2020)
'Marvellous-exact and icy and loving all at once.' - Sarah Moss
'A haunting, hopeful masterpiece.' - Sinéad Gleeson
It is 1985, in an Irish town. During the weeks leading up to Christmas, Bill Furlong, a coal and timber merchant, faces into his busiest season. As he does the rounds, he feels the past rising up to meet him - and encounters the complicit silences of a people controlled by the Church.
The long-awaited new work from the author of Foster, Small Things Like These is an unforgettable story of hope, quiet heroism and tenderness.
'[Claire Keegan] creates luminous effects with spare material, so every line seems to be a lesson in the perfect deployment of both style and emotion.' Hilary Mantel

Stunning
This really is extraordinary. A novella of incredible penetration of a period in Ireland when we were lacking such a basic empathy towards some women and girls. She inhabits a small story within that lack of empathy and it is very stirring. Beautifully read too. Brilliant.

A story to remember
A sensitive story, beautifully written, a spiritual note for us all to learn from. Nostalgic, sad, readable and recommended.

Less is definitely more..
a thoughtful, gentle, reflective story dealing with a subject usually less subtlety dealt with in Irish fiction.. this is a Christmas story to warm you all the year around..goes directly to the heart and stays there..

Wonderfully evocative. I wanted it to go on and hear more of what might have happened.

Quietly understated but has a loud voice!
It’s amazing how Claire Keegan packs so much characterisation into such a small novella. You leave this feeling you know exactly who Bill Furlong is. Is it worth doing what’s right vs doing what’s easy.

Short but profound
A well told and beautifully performed short work that centres around one man’s life and his reflection on his roots. References to the local Magdalene laundry are definite but nuanced.
