Wonderful performance of a tragic story
Something went wrong. Please try again in a few minutes.
Mende was 12 years old when she was snatched by slavers from her loving family in Sudan. After years of inhuman treatment, she finally ends up working for the family of a diplomat in London. From here she manages to escape and eventally gains asylum.
This raw account should be read as part of the school curriculum, to create awareness of modern day slavery and it's impact on survivors.
Beautifully read - a 'must listen'......

I'm done. Mende Nazer's book is emotionally explosive, told with love care and a such incredible detail. I felt the emotions. Her skill at speaking based on her tribes oral traditions coupled with a celebrated British journalist's³ skillful patient commitment to his craft has produced a riveting painfully honest account of cruelty due to race. The fact Mende has survived is the child's stubborn indignation at wrong, and her playful embrace of family, faith and friendships such as she had.
The epilogue outlined the painstaking process by which the book was written. Was a terrific ending.
Seems like she's here in London! I wonder if I can meet her?
Brutal alert to the terror & horror of human cruel
