Summary

When renowned archeologist Gav Gendin discovers the wreck of an Ancient starship, with a stasis pod and a still living member of the extinct aliens inside, it should be the greatest triumph of his career. Instead, it ends in disaster and leads to his son, Siv, being placed in cryogenic sleep.

A century later, Siv Gendin wakes to a world in decline, a world where you do what you must to survive. With the help of a snarky, sentient AI companion named Silky, Siv becomes a top procurement specialist.

Enslaved to the Shadowslip Guild, Siv has little hope of ever being his own man. Until they offer him freedom in exchange for completing a practically suicidal mission. His target: a young girl with uncanny abilities. Rival criminal guilds, foreign governments, and religious extremists will risk all-out war to get their hands on her - for good reason.

With her mysterious link to the Ancients, this girl could reshape human civilization, perhaps even bring back the golden age Siv knew as a child. But only if he is willing to defy the Shadowslip and risk everything to keep her safe.

The Benevolency Universe

For over 3,000 years a superintelligence called the Benevolence guided humanity through an age of unprecedented peace, prosperity, and technological advancement. Now, a century after its collapse, our enemies multiply as we struggle to maintain our starfaring civilization and recover technology we once took for granted. But the Benevolence kept many secrets to itself, secrets that could shape the future of humanity.

Can't wait to read the others

Loving it, can't wait to read all in the series! Peter Kenny does a great job with the narration

Almost a Culture story, very good from middle

With this narrator, the story has almost the feel of a Culture story (which is great). Its let down a little by the rushed pace and annoying character name Siv. Note also it takes until halfway through for the characters to link up and the direction of the story understood and become addictive, after this point it is something now I will stick with for the series.

A very good book

I struggled with the narration speed at first but then, as the book picked up pace it became an essential component. Very good storyline and an engaging set of characters.

Really enjoyed the pace and content. Also used to Peter Kenny voicing this type of book. Great to hear.

Fun Space Opera - Culture Lite

First off, this is a fun bit of Space Opera. And a lot of the tropes it employs are reminiscent of the late Iain Banks' classic, The Culture novels. Banks was a master of his craft and wrote very adult SF. I think Rogue Starship is aimed at a younger audience, adult content is hinted at and the humour is lighter. I think the book needs regarding as its own work, and my bad, Culture comparisons don't help it.

But with the Master, Peter Kenny, narrating, how can we avoid comparisons? Well just enjoy. Kenny brings the whole ensemble to life, with Silky the AI-esque sidekick chippy (fulfilling the Culture drone role) often stealing the show.

I've started book 2 as soon as book 1 finished, so I'm invested. Worth the listen. 👍
