About this listen

What do you get if you mix Harry Potter with Fourth Wing, Zodiac Academy, a dash of Arthurian legend, and lots and lots of vampires? Bloodwing Academy.

I didn't sign up for this.

A half-fae in a school of highblood vampires? That's a recipe for torment.

I'm Medra Pendragon—last of the dragon riders, or so they tell me. Funny thing is, there are no dragons left. Not a single one. But somehow, that hasn't stopped the vampires from deciding I'm worth capturing. Now, I'm stuck at Bloodwing Academy, where the highbloods run everything, and blightborn like me? We're just blood in their veins, pawns in their games.

But that's not even the worst part. Enter Blake Drakharrow. Cold, arrogant, and way too gorgeous for his own good. He's been tormenting me since the moment we met, and now, thanks to some ancient ritual, we're betrothed. He acts like he owns me, but I'm not going down without a fight.

Bloodwing isn't just a school—it's a battlefield. Highbloods fight for power, and if you're weak? You're dead.

Between deadly competitions, lies that could get me executed, and a dragon-shaped secret looming over my head, all I have to do is survive. Easy, right? Except I'm starting to think the real danger isn't the academy—it's what I'm becoming in this twisted game of power.

And Blake? He might just be the one who pushes me over the edge.

They think they can control me. They think they can use me.

But they have no idea what they've awakened.

Bestselling epic fantasy author Briar Boleyn returns with a new series perfect for fans of hate-to-love romance, heart-pounding action, and dark magic.

On Wings of Blood is a dark academia fantasy romance featuring a bully villain with Draco Malfoy energy who (eventually) gets the girl, all the tension and banter, and a tantalizingly dangerous blend of court and school intrigue all set in an intricately crafted world with unique vampire and dragon lore. Bloodwing Academy may have crossover characters from the world of Blood of a Fae but can be enjoyed completely independently. If you're a fan of original mythology, unique world-building, and character-driven romantasy series such as Crowns of Nyaxia, Blood and Ash, and A Court of Thorns and Roses, you won't want to miss out on this riveting new saga.

The story has all the elements that make a great story. However, as someone with terrible dyslexia, I rely on audiobooks to help me. The narration somehow doesn’t fit the FMC and MMC, whatsoever and can feel like a slog to get through.

The narration is extremely hard to gel with

Overall I did enjoy this, I think the subsequent books will bring it to life more but it did feel slow in places. As the world is being introduced I do expect that in the first novel as it sets everything up for the bulk of the plot.
I struggled with the narration - the male sounded like a man in his forties which was off putting. As someone who is English, the accent was so gratingly over pronounced. For example the pronunciation of "year" - felt like an incredibly posh stereotype of a poncy boarding school student.
I'm hoping the series truly blossoms with the set up of these interesting characters but I may continue via kindle if the narrators remain the same.

Hoping for more ...

* I listened to this via audible & read via KU for an immersive read *

This was EXACTLY what I needed after a reading slump, it was everything I needed in an academia, enemies to lovers vampire romance!!!!! I absolutely loved Blake’s voice in the audio!! He’s so gruff and angsty it was eating me alive!!!

This is a harsh world that eats everyone alive in it if you’re not strong enough. Medra wakes up in a pile of ashes and dead bodies with no idea how she got to this world. Medra is fae and has basically landed in a world where vampires are the apex predators and ‘blightborns’ are the lower class. All the vampires are hot and blonde, arrogant & overly confident because of the world they’re raised in. There’s something off about the power imbalances and Medra can sense this.

Blake, I love to hate him. This broody, moody arsehole of a man still managed to have me kicking my feet when I was reading his POV. More of this please in book 2!!!! He’s down bad from the get go, but you’d never know with the way he treats Medra. They’re bound together by Blake’s uncle as Medra has red hair and is identified as a dragon rider as she bares ‘the mark’ this isn’t overly explained but I’m hoping Medra’s mark, hair and heritage is expanded on more in book 2 as you only get bread crumbs in this book. Which I won’t call plot holes because with that ending I reallllly think we’re gonna get a lot more.

This world feels so brutal, raw and unpredictable because of the powers that be and their ‘law’ I cannot wait to find out more about the dragons too and the history!

The romance was painful at times as these 2 know they feel something and fought it every step of the way! But when the tension broke oh my goddddd it was so hot!!! I’d probably give it 1 🌶️ but I feel like book 2 will be 🌶️🌶️🌶️😁

I’m so glad I read this book WOW it’s so good, it’s like if zodiac academy, hp and a little bit of the serpents and the wings of night had a baby!!!

Blake’s voice 😩♥️🌶️

Fae, vampires, magic, dragons this book has it all. The narration was great I really enjoyed the narrators. The storyline was spot on. I love how this is a spin off from briars other series blood of fae which I loved

Easy 5 ⭐️’s

I really like the woman’s voice and find her easy to listen to. The story was good and enjoyable. The male reader sounds really robotic and uncomfortable, I found myself skipping all of his chapters.

Unique and a good listen

I’m quite disappointed of this book, the story I slow and predictable asf! I loved fourth wing and Zodiac academy and this one is NOT a baby of those two. If you compare the romance in this one with zodiac, ruthless boys of zodiac and fourth wing series it’s a complete JOKE!

The narrators are doing a great job so that’s a plus for this one. I’ve heard that book two is better then the first one but I think I will DNF this series.

Overrated

The way this book was written was frustrating to listen to.
So much detail without any detail!
The narration was poor, if I need to read the next one, it won't be on audible.
Story wise, nobody had the upper hand of knowing what was going on. Blake had all the opportunities to be a good bond, but never tried. Medra had opportunities to use her fae background, I have no idea if there is a prequel that explains more of this.
It was put together poorly and even though there seems to be some good lines of story within, I am not sure they will ever come together. Also how can a soul go into a knife?? Weird!

how to string out a story

I’m a bit flummoxed as to why this has been so hyped. There’s nothing original about this, and the quality of writing is shockingly poor.

Not great
