About this listen

The second book in a new series of procedural crime thrillers featuring DI Walsh and the team of the Last Chance Saloon, Murder of Angels is perfect for fans of L. J. Ross, Ian Rankin, Damian Boyd and Ann Cleeves.

Finding a home at DCI Alexander Monroe's Last Chance Saloon Crime Unit, Declan and his team are still recovering from the fallout connected to their most recent case....

But when Declan's old mentor, now terminally ill with cancer confesses to a gruesome murder, on the condition that Declan himself takes on the case, Declan and his colleagues find themselves in a race against time to find the real killer before a violent gang war breaks out over it. But soon another witness appears, claiming that he knows where the victim’s body is buried; in the process revealing another body in Birmingham, identical in every way. Now, with both North London and South Birmingham becoming battlegrounds and with vendettas reaching boiling point, Declan Walsh must delve back into the world of Johnny and Jackie Lucas, the East End ‘Twins’, as he tries to discover how one victim can have two identical bodies.

This took a while to get into but I am glad I stuck with it - will definitely read the next in series.

Where to start ... putting aside the members of the Last Chance Saloon, their various foibles, there's a confusing number of characters in Murder of Angels, that complicates an already convoluted storyline, around twin bodies, twin baby girls angelically named but split at birth by nuns, twin doggy priests, complicit corrupt coppers & three territorial city gangs with two of their bosses offspring's wanting their own action. And, then there's DI Declan Walsh, who repeatedly reiterates he's former military police, goes 'Rambo' again, with another confrontational shootout finale. If one suspends belief, it all becomes rather amusing, light entertainment, just not a police procedural to be taken seriously.

Confusingly amusing with twins central to it all!

Another incredibly complicated story. This time I only just managed to keep up with the plot twists and turns, but I worked out some of it. Really likeable main characters, love the daughter, Jess, and again can’t wait to start listening to the next one. I love Robin Laing’s narration, he is absolutely brilliant. Despite the sheer number of characters, I always knew who was talking. Highly recommended.

What an excellent read. No nonsense. 100% story building. No description of sweeties and fluff in pockets or choice of cornflakes brand. No padding to keep up the word count. Just 100% excellent plot. Looking forward to the next one already!

Complicated and exciting

Loved the first book, this one , not so much.
It was way too muddled. I'm sure the author had it straight in his head, but there were too many characters in this. I'm sure many of them were surplus to requirements.
The story line was a bit laughable, mainly because of one too many twists.
The narrator, while certainly not the worst I've heard, could not do certain accents.
I may try another,then again,I may not.

Well,what can I say

I’m enjoying this series but you really have to concentrate because there are so many characters and the plots are quite convoluted. You almost need your own crime scene board to keep up with things. I find I’m now making notes so that I don’t have to keep repeating sections to find where people fit in.

Should come with free crime scene board

Great story line, enjoying the Walsh story line. Can't wait to read the next instalment.

I've enjoyed both books in the series so far. There's a good range of interesting characters who have plenty of room for development. I really like this narrator and seeing it was him drew me to trying the stories. The downside is the stories can be a little over-convoluted at times and the overuse of corrupt police.

Very enjoyable

As always, these books are brilliant. One heart rate increasing moment to the next, you can't help but wonder who's good or bad, who's going to be next in the cross hairs. Excellent stuff!

Adrenaline inducing excellence
