A TIMES, INDEPENDENT, FINANCIAL TIMES, AND IRISH TIMES BOOK OF THE YEAR
SHORTLISTED FOR THE WILLIAM HILL SPORTS BOOK OF THE YEAR

A magnificent book. ' MIKE ATHERTON

'A masterpiece.' IRISH TIMES
'Electrifying.' GUARDIAN

From the author of The Damned Utd and Red or Dead, an extraordinary novel about Britain, sport and our collective past.

February 6, 1958, British European Airways Flight 609 crashed on take-off at Munich Airport. On board were the young Manchester United team, 'the Busby Babes', and the journalists who followed them. Twenty-one of the passengers died instantly, four were left fighting for their lives while six more were critically injured.

Munichs is the story of the crash and its aftermath, of those who survived and those who did not, of how Britain and football changed, and how it did not; a novel of tragedy, but also of hope.

'Profound . . . A brilliant, brilliant book.' DAVID WHITEHOUSE
'Luminous and illuminating . . . completely gripping.' ASHLEY HICKSON-LOVENCE
'Powerful.' TARIQ GODDARD

Superb audiobook, delivered with the dignity and respect those who died deserved, especially for their families. As a United fan I learnt so much more about the club, especially from Jimmy’s point of view. Christopher Eccleston narrates this with such good pace, emotion and timing

Respectfully delivered throughout

Mike Atherton is usually spot on and he is about this book. Poignaht and powerful. As a United fan, I grew up with the Munich story but learned so much about all those involved and how it must have affected them. Does them all and the story justice - helped in no small part by Christopher Ecclestone's narrative

A book that does justice to a tragic and powerful story and all those it involved

Beautifully written semi-fictional account of the Munich Air Crash and it’s aftermath. Really brought the weight of events to life. I love Peace’s circuatous narrative style, which suits being read aloud.

Beautifully evocative

David Peace brings to life the horror of the plane crash but also the deep emotional impact of all those affected by it.

Christopher Ecclestones narration beautifully compliments the story. Highly recommend even for those not interested in football.

Gripping story of Munich plane crash

An emotional roller coaster that has the ability to make you cheer and scream simultaneously. Wonderfully narrated by Christopher Eccleston, who gave the story extra weight (if that’s even possible). Thank you David for creating this and Chris for bringing the story to life. 1958, Forever in their Debt

Incredible work superbly narrated

A masterpiece. Beautifully lends itself to being spoken aloud. A marvellous performance from both writer and reader.

Heartbreaking and beautiful. Extraordinary work.

Christopher Eccleston reading this couldn’t be more perfect. It’s a compelling listen. It really hits hard and the authors use of repetition really emphasises the magnitude of this horrific event.

Incredibly moving

David Peace's style is what it is. if you like it, you like it. if you don't you don't. There's a question of whether there's a point to this book, but I thought it really drove home the survivor's guilt and personal terror of the Munich Air Disaster and not just the survivors but the people around them.

an uncomfortable look inside a tragedy

A compelling story spoiled by the author’s over repetition, clearly done for effect but ultimately grating

In the style of the narrative: I'm not sure about this book, not sure at all, no, not sure at all. Not at all.
I am old enough to remember the Munich tradegy. I was a very young United fan then and have been a fan ever since. I found this novel a strange creation. Who is it for and what is it for? Personally I found the authors explanation unconvincing. For reasons I can't begin to fully explain this book left me feeling just a little angry.

Was this work of fiction necessary?
