About this listen
In a desperate bid to get out of town, twenty-seven-year-old virgin and bookstore nerd Elena Zelenska becomes the world's most unlikely mail-order bride. Her gamble pays off when she's swept off her feet by Lorne Ronson, handsome single father and (gasp!) actual published author. Elena's new fiancé seems almost too good to be true. Her life is turning into a fairytale, especially once Lorne starts building her a castle in the woods. But when Elena arrives in Grimstone, her fairytale turns darker.
The castle in the woods is a macabre labyrinth of hidden chambers, and Lorne is no Prince Charming. In fact, he might just be a monster.
Isolated far from home, Elena's only ally is Atlas Covett, owner of the Monarch hotel. Massive and stern, even Atlas' employees are terrified of him. He becomes Elena's unexpected protector, offering sanctuary from the darkness that threatens to consume her.
As Elena's bond with Atlas deepens, her jealous fiancé exerts his control in increasingly twisted ways. Elena must find a way out before the castle he's building becomes a prison she'll never escape…
Lark Notes:
Halloween is my favorite time of year. Even though I'm a huge baby, I can't seem to resist true crime, thrillers, and movies that keep me up all night. Monarch is my love letter to Spooky Season, a romance-thriller mashup for those of us who crave the dark and scary, as long as we know there's a happy ending somehow. – Sophie
"Monarch" is a dark contemporary romance and a complete standalone. Listener beware: it has spicy scenes and triggering content not suitable for all.

Great book
This was an amazing read. Atlas and Elena were so good. I loved how protective Atlas was straight away and the connection he and Elena had was undeniable from the beginning. I love a little mystery and I didn't guess what it was that Elena was running away from until it was revealed.
The narrators were fantastic and brought the characters to life perfectly and made me enjoy the story even more. I loved reading and listening to the book at the same time it makes reading so much better!!

Loved it
Monarch is the 2nd book in the Grimstone series and it had me hooked from beginning to end.
The story had a spooky, gothic setting and gave off suspenseful/ thriller vibes.
The story follows Elena, a mail order bride, who comes to America to marry Lorne, a horror author. However, the more time she spends with him, she starts to realize he's not the man she thought he was.
As strange things start happening at the hotel they're staying at, and her fiance becoming more sinister by the day, her only hope is the Hotel's owner, Atlas, who's attracted to her, and keeps an eye out hoping to protect her from danger. As the story progressed, I loved seeing these two slowly open their hearts to each other.
This story had me at the edge of my seat. There were well loved characters and hated ones, who all served to make the story a captivating tale that was perfect for spooky season.
With unexpected twists and turns, the story gave us a great blend of mystery, tension, spice, well developed characters and eerie world-building. I loved it and would definitely recommend it
