About this listen

The second gripping thriller in the Kate Brannigan series, from best-selling author Val McDermid.

PI Kate Brannigan is hired to investigate a series of strange financial scams across Manchester. At first it looks like a discrepancy with the paperwork, but the deeper Kate digs, the murkier the case becomes.

Before long she’s up to her neck in crooked land deals – and murder – and her own life is on the line....

Critic reviews

"A satisfying range of villains, Manchester and its environs turn deeply sinister and Brannigan toughs and wisecracks her way to a solution." (The Times)

"Kate Brannigan deserves promotion to the top rank, alongside Kinsey Millhone and V.I. Warshawski. Plot, characterisation, pace are all first-rate, and Brannigan is one of the most likeable of all today’s PIs." (Sunday Telegraph)

Clever scam!

love that Val writes about local places and I am growing to like Kate more in this book. The scam s a very realistic sort of scam which makes it more plausible.

series gets underway

As an avid reader of crime I have been meaning to try some Val mcDermid books. Her Kate Branaghan series is really getting going with this second installment.
Great narrator and easy to listen to on long journeys. I shall keep on with the next.

Love this series

I have just got into the Kate Brannigan series having listened to a few other Of Val McDermid’s books. Whilst I thoroughly enjoy all her books are find that all are read so brilliantly this one was a little tricky to get on top of all the characters - I got there in the end but I know if I’d been reading an actual book I would have been turning back the pages to catch up which character had done what with who!

Kate Brannigan series

These books are a wonderful down to earth listen. Heard the first three and heading for book 4, a big up for the narrator who brings Kate to life, top marks

Cross over romance and crime

Wonderful story, although starting from a shocking experience, it is so heartwarming and paradise like.
Well read too and a great listen

Not as good as the Tony Hill/Carol Jordan series

This series of books is ok but In a different league to the Tony Hill books. I bought the series of these after enjoying the Tony Hill books. I find it hard to believe these are by the same author. These just don’t grip me the same. The plots are not very plausible either.

Lighter Than More Recent Val McDermid Books

It's interesting that this 30 year old story is almost like historical fiction. Much of the plot involves technology that was up to the minute in the early 90s, but is very dated now: not that that takes away from the fact that it's a thoroughly enjoyable listen.

Quite Gripping.

Very good book, I'm finding as I get older it's more enjoyable to listen to books as I tend to lose concentration after a while if reading by myself, I've always enjoyed reading but age brings other problems.
The book seemed more gripping than the other one I had read.
The narrator I find is quite good as on several occasions I actually thought there were more people reading.
I look forward to reading more in this series.

Not as good story line as usual. Bit slow and drags on. But was a easy listen.
