Summary

Online romance fraud is a problem across the globe. It causes financial and emotional devastation, yet many people refuse to take it seriously. This is the story of one middle-aged woman in a cardigan determined to understand this growing phenomenon.

No other woman has had so many online romances–from Keanu Reeves to Brad Pitt to Prince William–and Becky Holmes is a favorite among peacekeeping soldiers and oil rig workers who desperately need iTunes vouchers. By winding up scammers and investigating the truth behind their profiles, Becky shines a revealing, revolting and hilarious light on a very shady corner of the internet.

Featuring first-hand accounts of victims, examples of scripts used by fraudsters, a look into the psychology of fraud and of course plenty of Becky's hysterical interactions with scammers, this is a must-listen for anyone who needs a reminder that Keanu Reeves is NOT in love with them.

Everyone should read this

This is a dfascinating, sometimes funny but mostly shocking account of people who have been victim of romance scams and tragically lost vast amounts of money. It's frightening how widespread it is which is clearly because the fraudsters know they are likely to get away with it. The only thing that I think the author could have gone into more of is why women who seem other wise switched on and intelligent would really believe that someone could fall on love with them without even meeting them. To me that seems impossible but I don't want to sound complacent as we never know when we might be targeted. Well done to the author for raising awareness of this heartless crime.

Captivating, Eye-opening and Hilarious!

I’ve followed Becky for a very long time on Twitter (X) and was thrilled to learn she was writing a book and even happier when she announced it was available as an audio book. I was not prepared for how funny and how moving the book was, how informative and widespread the issue of romance fraud is! Becky’s performance was exceptionally good, bringing her humour to life (at times making me laugh out loud) and made me hang off every word as she described the heartbreaking stories. The mix of humour and true life events and research was handled brilliantly and made what is a very emotional topic, light, informative and intriguing. Absolutely worth your time and I hope she writes more!

Hilarious, heartbreaking, insightful and generally a brilliant read.

I cannot recommend this book enough.

The first few chapters had me laughing out loud all the way through, but this then makes way for a thoughtful and well researched exploration of many aspects of the world of Romance fraud, narrated with compassion, humour and really accessible explanations.

I learned so much and was thoroughly entertained all the way through. I hope the author finds another topic to explore as I would love to read more by her.

WOW!

BRILL|ANT|! Informative in a very kind of way. Witty... and so capturing that I did not want to miss a second. To the point that I listened to acknowledgements for the first time in my over a half century long life! 😁 And the author reading it is a major plus! Thank you!

Brilliant read

A compassionate deep dive into romance fraud, mixed with investigations into how/why scammers do it and some of the hilarious ways she tries to waste the *#+*’s time when they have tried to scam her on the socials. It’s not just celeb impersonators who try either - people claiming they’re pilots, UN peacekeepers, doctors… any type of person really as long as they get under your skin and in your mind. A brilliant read 💛🩷

Interesting

This is a book I have often thought someone should write - the author converses with scammers online in full knowledge of what they are up to while giving them as much of the run around as possible. Quite fun.

There are also plenty of stories of scams perpetrated on women included and information on how scams work in practice (I will be forever wary of anyone online asking me what my hobbies are!).

However, one thing that really irritated me was that despite recounting the excruciating details of several women’s experiences with scammers AND pointing out that many of those conned still mistakenly believe that the scammer had actual real feelings for them, the author goes on to state that despite being conned out of money by a previous partner a long time ago she still maintains that “he really did love me” (?!) .. Cue screeching brakes noise and big fat Scooby Doo “HUH?”

That aside it’s a fairly good listen and just wish the author had spelled out the code word that scammers use to self identify themselves to other scammers as that would be handy to use as a dating profile name.
