About this listen
Wayne Sleep has danced with ballet legends Rudolf Nureyev and Margot Fonteyn, partied with Freddie Mercury and performed with Princess Diana, becoming her close friend.
Behind the glitz and glamour, Wayne has always felt like an outsider. Sleep reveals the difficulties for a working-class, gay man in handling the prejudices of his generation and living through the Aids epidemic. Wayne was also the shortest principal dancer in the Royal Ballet - he had to spin twice as fast and jump twice as high to succeed.
In this moving - but also laugh-out-loud and gossip filled - memoir, Wayne Sleep shows how he danced his way to success, fulfilment and love, and how he overcame obstacles and prejudice along the way.©2024 Wayne Sleep (P)2024 Hodder & Stoughton Limited

So beautiful, so enjoyable
What an interesting self-biography. It was uplifting and inspiring. Thank you to Wayne Sleep for having taken the time to write a book, it is such a time consuming task but so worth it. Would love to hear the recording of his mother’s record. A splendid book, highly recommended.

Wonderful!! Thank you, Wayne Sleep!
Having loved the arts and, specifically, classical ballet since my Mum treated me to a performance of The Nutcracker at age nine, I enjoyed reading Wayne's autobiography so very much including learning all about the many other performances and successes he's had during his life!
The gossip was fun to read about too and precious memories of such wonderful people as Princess Diana and Freddie Mercury also was lovely!
Thank you, Wayne Sleep, for writing such a great book and congratulations on reaching 75! 😊. Briefly, I looked after my Mother once she had had a mini stroke and later was diagnosed with dementia. But beforehand, we shared a love for dance, particularly ballet and enjoyed days out to see performances all over including Covent Garden. A truly happy memory of mine is of seeing "Sleeping Beauty" a fair number of years ago and we saw you playing the role of the male Bluebird! Absolutely beautiful and Magnificently mesmerising!
Best wishes,
Sue Adams

A Royal love letter.
A charismatic dancer, driven to succeed. There is a deeper more personal story to be told. But unfortunately here the reader/listener is allowed all too, quick flashes behind a curtain, which is royal blue and fixated with his friend Princess Diana, so much so that the title of the book, should have been Diana and Me. But then I wouldn't have been interested in the first place. A autobiography performing a two-step when this reader wanted a ballet.
