About this listen

Introduction to Sailing is veteran sailor Christian Williams’ candid and highly entertaining invitation to boats and the sea. Writing for new sailors of every kind, he evokes the joy of wind and water in an intimate style that begins with dinghies, which he advocates as most fun of all, and continues through cruising boats small and large and for every budget.

His invitation to join him on a tiny sunfish is itself a short course in how to sail any boat, and from there he leads us on a hands-on practical tour of daysailers, pocket cruisers, and the offshore sailboats of dreams, all informed by his own experience in dinghy and offshore racing, long-distance cruising, and survival in gales and storm. After 30,000 miles at sea Williams’ enthusiasm is contagious, and his more than 10 million views on YouTube have made him a social influencer.

Conceived as an audiobook, this extended personal conversation is an invaluable course in how to get started sailing, what boat to buy and how to pay for it, and the value of forever directing our imagination beyond the horizon ahead.

First off - and quite apart from everything else - Christian renews my faith in Americans.
This utterly charming book takes a completely different approach than most sailing introductions - alternating descriptive chapters with laid-back, guided visualisation - I cannot recommend this highly enough, particularly to folks who might be slightly nervous about sailing; or to give to your family members who you're trying to entice onboard as crew.
And coming from NZ I really enjoyed the descriptions of sailing in parts of the world (e.g. the Chesapeake Bay) I'm not likely to get to experience directly.

This book is a very easy going, humorous explanation of sailing for beginners. I sailed as a child for a few weeks and loved it, and now in my late twenties I want to start sailing again. This is the perfect way to re-familiarise with the terms and sparks inspiration and excitement about getting out to sail again!

Excellent

Part autobiography, but mainly enjoyable ramblings on sailing, and how to do it.Makes one almost feel like in a dialogue.Highly recommended for people interested in sailing.
