About this listen

Brought to you by Penguin.

Dear Reader,

Checking into a mental clinic wasn't exactly on my radar in 2022. Writing about it wasn't either. But here we are.

I spent a lifetime trying to create a 'front' to give everyone the illusion that all is well. It wasn't, and it isn't. Now I look back and I think, 'what the f*ck was that all about?'

I began the book trying to find meaning by going on various, life-changing journeys, I ended up in a mental clinic; obviously things didn't work out the way I expected. This is the story of what happened after the mental car crash . . . From then on, the journey had to turn inward. It turns out I wasn't looking for meaning, I was looking for home.

I'm not a fiction writer. I can't fake it. I could say I rode into the sunset, but life isn't like that unless you're a cowboy. Truth is I'm not as well as I thought I was.

These days, trying to stay sane in a completely chaotic world makes life incredibly difficult. For those readers who are deep in the darkness of mental illness, I hope my book makes you feel less alone.

Take care, love,
Ruby x

A thoughtful listen

Raw, funny but sad at times. This is a refreshing story of someone who has battled mental health problems and sought answers. I could listen to Ruby talk about anything, her take on things is open and honest.

Not as ill as I thought

Well I learnt a lot from this book. Some funny things and some sad things but Ruby is so captive and I love her so much.

Honest and true

An amazing insight from into the mind and the potential to heal oneself from past influences. Nobody is without flaws but learning to accept them and find self compassion is where you find your true self. Blessings to you Ruby for your honesty and strength thanks for sharing.

Loved this and Ruby

Half way through the first chapter I had to pause as I was laughing that much I couldn't breathe! Ruby is wonderful, my Birthday is a day after hers so think as a fellow Aries I appreciate her sarcasm & 100 mile an hour crazy all the more, Ed is a trooper and I wish them a long loving & chaotic life together.

Beautiful raw, authentic and very funny

I just loved hearing Ruby’s story. There were so many moments where I was moved to tears. While it is very much her story, it is also a birds-eye view of humanity. I am so glad I listened to it rather than read, I loved hearing Ruby’s voice

Honest, painful, hilarious

A powerful testament to the transformative power of honesty and vulnerability. As a mental health sufferer, I found great comfort in her Ruby’s openness about her struggles and her humour.

Ruby’s writing is not only engaging and insightful, but it also fosters a sense of community and understanding. Her book is a must-read for anyone on their own “mental health journey” I highly recommend it to those who are looking for an authentic and compassionate account of the this hellish experience.

Authentically and comically delivered

Ruby is so relaxing to listen to, I’ve thoroughly enjoyed this from beginning to end and having moved over to audiobooks I’m so glad I made that leap for this particular title also, she is so comical and authentic in her delivery of words, so insightful as well to find out about how she deals with her ongoing condition - thank you so much and I’ll now rewind and listen to previous audiobooks by the author herself Ruby Wax
