A great rom-com featuring disabled characters front and centre.

This is a great story about disabled and queer characters living life. I mean, imagine!😁 As a wheelchair user with Cerebral Palsy, I didn't think the discrimination I face on a daily basis would have a lot in common with a deaf dancer, but there is a lot more crossover than I thought.

This shows the importance of treating disability as a social construct, for the most part rather than an individual defect.

This is the sort of book I wish I had growing up. The only time I saw a disabled person in a book it usually involved in a brave hospital visit somewhere in the plot. There are no hospitals here. Everyone is far too busy working hard during the week and playing hard at weekends .

While I don't think I am the target demographic age wise, the Love Island references passed me by, (apparently Tasha Ghouri won!) I loved Lizzie Huxley Jones' previous novel Make You Mine This Christmas so this was always going to be an auto read for me because I knew I would feel seen whilst also getting lost in a fantastic story.

Dear, publishing industry, more like this, please!

Love and Friendship

Cassie is chosen for auditioning in a musical tour and arrives in America very self-conscious of her cochlear implant. She soon realises all the other dancers have some form of disability, which gives her some confidence and begins making friends with her group.

Along the way, Cassie meets Levi, a Scottish musician who treats her much better than her ex and they soon begin a romance that is so loving and tender. The part with the batteries was incredibly tear-jerking!

I enjoyed all the relationships, as well as the fact that Cassie's best friend, Penn, goes along with her for support! There is a lot of representation in this book, which I found refreshing and educational.

The audiobook is fantastic - the narrator did an amazing job of all the different accents and the pacing was spot on. Hearing the authors give a bit of background story at the end was interesting and enjoyable.
