Summary
Rather be the hunter than the prey.
Inspired by a true story.
Ella Maria Chauncey walks home after a night out with her friends, hurrying to get back before her parents realize she's been out with the boy they don't want her to date. Living in the gated community of Lyford Cay, in one of the world's wealthiest neighborhoods, she believes it is safe. Ella Maria never makes it home. She is found the next day floating in her family's pool, her tongue cut out.
Seven months later, Jack Ryder is visiting the Bahamas with his adopted daughter Emily. They're trying to find Emily's relatives, but it turns out to be easier said than done. The only living relative they can track down is a woman…in jail. She's doing time for murdering Ella Maria Chauncey, but as Jack digs into the case, he starts to wonder if she was wrongfully convicted and the murderer is still out there, hunting for his next prey. As the shocking investigation unfolds, and secrets are revealed, no one in in the lucrative Lyford Cay can be trusted.

And what a good word it is
I enjoyed this book. It is slightly different to the rest of the books in the series in the fact that all of Jack's children have taken a step back and for this part of the story it is just him and his adopted daughter Emily. Not that Emily doesn't have her own problems, anorexia being the biggest. I really liked this instalment because through the whole series the author has touched on how bad it was getting but In this book we see Jack tackling it head on. The mystery was good and like normal you jump around in time and with character, so that you get the background story of why the killings occurred. I have to say I think I like this book the best so far mainly because I like Emily and I want to see things work out for her.
Jack has finally made the promise happen, he is taking his adopted daughter home to find out if she has any living relatives in the Bahamas. At first they get the run around with no one knowing the name, until a lady hands Jack a newspaper. In the article a lady with the same last name has just been sent to prison for the murder of an American girl. This trip was a way for Jack to bond with his daughter and In the hopes of finding out about her roots it will help her come back to him and want to live or at the least start eating. Instead it drags them into a murder investigation that has them learning secrets about each other. The murder her aunty has been arrested and confessed to isn't the first one like it on the island. Several American girl have gone missing and turned up dead, with there tongues cut out and a word tattooed on there backs. Jack despite not having a badge starts to investigate and with his daughters help they hope to free her aunt and rescue the latest missing girl. And Jack hopes in the process to help his own.
I liked the narrator and thought he did a good job, even did a few accents.
