About this listen

'When I was 12 years old God spoke to my father for the first time. God didn't say much. He told my father to be a painter and left it at that.... '

So begins Niall Williams' magical tale about love and destiny. Nicholas Coughlan and Isabel Gore were made for each other - but fate doesn't always take the easiest or the most obvious route to true love. For a start, Nicholas and Isabel have never met and nor are they likely to, without some kind of divine intervention. But as God, ghosts, a series of coincidences and seemingly chance events and encounters conspire to bring the couple together, other - often more human - forces attempt to keep them apart. 'What will be, will be,' of course, but that doesn't guarantee a happy-ever-after ending, nor answer the question 'Will they or won't they?'

Written in a lyrical, lilting tone, Four Letters of Love is a glorious, uplifting story about faith, about seizing the moment, believing in your instincts and acting on impulse - and about following your heart, no matter where it may lead.

Balm for the soul

I first read this book in my 20s and then reread it in my 60s. I remained entranced by the spectacular language. Each sentence evoked vivid pictures of landscape and people. Or you could take a sentence and roll it around in your mouth like a delicious bonbon. Or meditate on it for a day. Some simply take your breath away. I have copied out large sections of this beautiful poetry. Been to the islands.

The aching story of love and life is deep and rooted in the dynamics that inform all relationships.

I have since listened to this audiobook at least five times. It is a balm. It is grounding. It brings joy. I shall continue to listen to it!! Favourite audiobook of all time.

Beautiful love story

Niall Williams writes so lyrically, I felt totally immersed in the beautiful island and its inhabitants, and enjoyed every chapter as the story unfolded. It brought me to tears. Just beautiful.

Perfect writing and beautiful narration I didn’t want it to end

A wonderful story set in Ireland and as with all of Williams novels written with such beauty. The narrator a perfect match. I can’t criticise one element as for me this was perfect. If you want a lyrical story, full of love and the occasional sadness treated with gentle humour and with impeccable narration this is the audible book for you.

Couldn't stop listening

If you could sum up Four Letters of Love in three words, what would they be?

So refreshing to hear an Irish book read with sympathy and humour

A dream like story read brilliantly.

This lovely tale, set on Southern Ireland, is made all the lovelier by its beautiful reading. The poetic language reads like a ballad and contours up vivid pictures as it weaves the mystery of the story from start to finish. Almost ethereal, the characters come alive. I was spellbound. Anyone who likes poetic language and a gentle story with a different type, but pleasing ending, will adore it.

The writing is sublime which is Niall Williams trademark- his stories stay with you long after finishing- a master craftsman
Talking about craftsman- the narrator voice is so in keeping simply stunning

Lovely story but with a "sudden ending"

Quick and short chapters that move between different people scenes and timelines. Didn't realise why the title until the last few chapters of the book. wish we got more of an insight into their togetherness
