Summary

THE INSTANT NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER

Learn how to reboot your metabolism, build strength, and extend your life with this accessible new book that demonstrates the importance of muscle for health and longevity from the founder of the Institute for Muscle-Centric Medicine®.

After years of watching patients cycle through her practice, Dr Gabrielle Lyon noticed a pattern. While her patients struggled with a wide range of conditions, they all suffered from the same core problem: they had too little muscle rather than too much fat.

When we think about muscle, we tend to think about strength or aesthetics, but in reality, muscle accounts for so much more than that. As the body's largest endocrine organ, muscle actually determines everything about the trajectory of health and aging. Many of the conditions Dr Lyon's patients were experiencing were actually symptoms of underdeveloped or unhealthy muscle.

Now, Dr Lyon offers an easy-to-follow food, fitness, and self-care program anchored in evidence and pioneering research that teaches you how to optimize muscle-no matter your age or health background. Discover how to overcome everything from obesity to autoimmune disorders and avoid diseases like Alzheimer's, hypertension, and diabetes by following Dr Lyon's powerful new approach to becoming forever strong.

The truth is here - you do what you want with this info

It really makes you understand why we got here today having such bad health crisis across the globe.
Meat has been blamed. Animal foods have been blamed.
While in reality is what helped us all throughout the past centuries- meat and animal foods were at the core, broths, animal fats, and we never were obese or unhealthy like we are now.

Decent science, boring delivery

the narration sets the book back a lot it, it is not a fun audiobook to digest and would be best in written form.

Great advice, some problems as an audiobook.

I came across Gabrielle Lyon on Youtube, and was very impressed by the blend of scientific studies and common sense that is the basis for her "muscle-centric" approach to healthy aging. Her book is a more in depth discussion of the principles behind it, and advice for implementing it into your daily life.

It's a good step-by-step guide, covering all the basics for people who are new to this area. It does however spend a lot of time on motivational stuff, and I would have preferred some more in depth discussion of the science. It also a long sections trying to describe different types of exercises, which doesn't work well in audio format.

The author does a perfectly acceptable job as her own narrator.

Absolute Garbage full of contradictions

Had high hopes for this book but after grinding and grinding through, I had to throw the Towel in about three quarters of the way through !! Confusing guidance with contradiction after contradiction.......'Carbs are dangerous'.......'eat over 100 Grams of Carbs a day'.......'Eat Meat'.....'Don't eat Meat'....blah, blah, Blah !!!

Seriously one to forget.........DO NOT GET THIS BOOK...

Absolutely slates plant based eating

I have never left a review before but had to for this. I heard the author on a Mel Robbins podcast. Mel asked her ‘what about our vegetarian or vegan friends’ to which she replied about pea protein shakes.
What she actually says (not until almost 4 hours in sadly), is that people who don’t eat red meat eat fake meat substitutes, ice-cream, cake and chips (crisps) instead. I am stunned and sickened by the author.
When asked by Mel she should have said her actual views. I feel robbed that I paid for this book.
Needless to say, don’t buy if you are vegetarian or vegan …or neither, but don’t eat red meat.

Good Science, Poor Narration

I love Dr Lyon and her mentor Don Layman. Don't get me wrong, I don't subscribe to every bit of their nutrition theses. However, I do think they have a lot correct. So I was really looking forward to this book. Sadly within minutes of starting to listen to this book, I returned it. First to the science. I am saddened that Dr Lyon continues to poo poo plant-based diets. I know an awful lot of whole food plant-based people who get a lot of protein and build muscle even in old age. As a West African, more than half my protein intake is from plants and there are many people like me throughout Africa. We eat animal proteins but mostly fish and rarely red meat. As an example, my mother who has eaten the same diet her whole life is 82 and still trains twice a week.
Secondly, Dr Lyon's publisher did her wrong by allowing her to narrate the book. If they really wanted her to go ahead with the narration, she should have sought professional advice and training to prepare her for this. She also needed good quality equipment and an editor.
Narrating a book is not the same as recording a podcast. Too many plosives and her pacing is wrong for an audiobook narration. I will buy a physical copy of the book.

Anti vegan/ vegetarian propaganda

At first the book in the first few chapters was quite acceptable.

She spoke about the need to increase our muscle mass and reduce our body fat. However, she then went into a complete rant against plant-based protein and also how unhealthy vegans and vegetarians are eating white bread and pasta. This is just not true as a whole food plant-based vegan. I don’t eat white bread and my diet is extremely healthy and I have more protein than people eating animal meat.
If eating animal meat is your thing then that’s fine however being so antagonistic in this area has put me right off listening to the rest of this book.

It has gone in the bin
