About this listen

The dead talk. To the right listener, they tell us all about themselves: how they lived, how they died--and who killed them.

Val McDermid uncovers the secrets of forensic medicine with groundbreaking research and her own experience. Along the way you’ll wonder at how maggots collected from a corpse can help determine time of death and how a DNA trace a millionth the size of a grain of salt can be used to convict a killer.

Critic reviews

"McDermid has the ruthless psychological scalpel that forms part of the equipment of all good novelists, whatever their genre. And, fortunately for us, she knows just how to use it." ( Guardian)

Fascinating

This was really interesting and I learnt loads about forensic evidence. Don’t let the reviews about the accents put you off. The narrator is Scottish and occasionally she’ll do an accent i.e. northerner, Londoner, etc.

Forensics

an enjoyable insight into many different areas of forensics. Only downside for me is that I had heard many of the stories previously in other books / podcasts etc. well worth a listen.

Narration no problem

I found the narration to be very good, unlike some other reviewers. It certainly didn’t detract from an interesting and detailed book.

A beautifully narrated and engaging listen.

Having heard any number of narrators mangle accents, I was astonished to hear this lovely Scottish narrator carry off Manchester, Yorkshire and American beautifully!
This prevented me being pulled out of the narrative and allowed me to really hear the different experts 'speak'.

Informative and interesting

I thoroughly enjoyed this very informative and interesting book, which covers the major aspects of the application of modern forensic science to find evidence and help to investigate crime. There are relevant historical "digressions" which discuss the origins of eg fingerprinting and DNA analysis.

The narrator, who has a nice Scottish accent, read at a comfortable pace and when quoting from interviews, used plausible "voices". My only gripe was the occasional slightly-too-long pause between paragraphs, something which could easily have been fixed during editing.

Unmissable...

First class. Interesting from the first word. The narration is excellent. I have seen complaints about the accents but I found them to be a useful addition to the narration which was excellent throughout.

Fascinating and exciting

As a budding forensic scientist, this is one of the many books I read (listened to) on the subject.
This is a fantastic overview of various disciplines, the history of forensic science, methods and improvements to the science used to solve crime and prosecute criminals.
Highly recommend.
