About this listen

No Stone Unturned recreates the genesis of NecroSearch International: a small, eclectic group of scientists and law enforcement personal, active and retired, who volunteer their services to help locate the clandestine graves of murder victims and recover the remains and evidence to assist with the apprehension and conviction of the killers. Known early on as "the pig people" because of their experiments in locating graves using the carcasses of pigs (due to their similarities to human bodies), NecroSearch has evolved and expanded into one of the most respected forensic investigation teams in the world.

In No Stone Unturned, New York Times best-selling author Steve Jackson, the author of Bogeyman and Monster, vividly tells the story of this incredible group and recounts some of their most memorable early cases that separately would make great true crime books. Following his participation in a NecroSearch expedition to Russia looking for the remains of a Russian noble in 2013, Jackson was made an honorary member of NecroSearch International in November 2014.

Critic reviews

"A fascinating journey into the trenches of crime [investigation]" (Lowell Cauffiel, New York Times best-selling author of House of Secrets)
"The book covers the group's quirky beginnings and digs into its most important cases suspensefully; Jackson's sharp eye misses nothing in the painstakingly rendered details. A must-have for true crime fans, it should also be of great interest to anyone fascinated with the practical applications of science." (Publisher's Weekly)
" No Stone Unturned delves into cases that would make good novels, but they're real. Furthermore, he describes a group of uncommon people performing uncommon tasks, and he does it with respect, accuracy and genuine style." (Ron Franscell)

The subject matter is fascinating but undisputedly dark. Fortunately the narration is very well done, with the weight of the stories being told, really being felt. The narrator’s voice is gentle and the manner kind. Great work

Absorbing and sensitively narrated

It can be a struggle to convey any academic or scientific information interestingly. It can be an even greater struggle to convey that information to a general audience. This book did that brilliantly, if not poetically.

Exceptional

I very rarely write reviews because I’m quite honestly lazy, or mean to but never quite get round to it (at least I’m honest!)
In this case I felt like I absolutely had to because I don’t think I’ve ever come across such a harrowing yet heartwarming tale about a group of selfless, enthusiastic and inspirational individuals.

These events are true as records and memories can serve correctly which always adds an extra dimension to an audiobook, in my opinion, because you can explore further into it if you should so desire, and that scenes and faces are easier to place if the idea of imagination just isn’t quite enough.

Now just because the events are true doesn’t stop the writer from giving enough background and science to really give you a clear understanding about what inspired the first concept, or the little ditties about heresay or quaint titbits like how the name was chosen or how each chosen case followed through to its end. It also didn’t cleanse the real truth by leaving out the less successful outcomes, rather how even the negatives were actually considered more as learning outcomes, and they weren’t all about the glamour of the find, in fact in more than one of the tales, they didn’t wait to find out if the information had the desired effect because the science was the goal rather than the result.

Each addition to the group had the role explained in such a way that it was seamless for me as the ‘reader’ to understand how their individual skills and knowledge and scientific ability could play its part and be beneficial to the greater good or bad without being condescending without needing a degree to even grasp what they were doing.

The tales were very well laid out with enough of a mixture about real life cases without thinking they were just sensationalising the story for gore effect, or barely scraping the surface to dazzle with the amount of content either. The story flowed from start to finish and I for one would really love a sequel or further tales….

Now to the narrator…… Perfection! Nothing else to say really. He sounded like he felt everything that the author or individuals themselves may have felt and it seemed like all of those nuances had been tattooed into his soul. He has such velvety tones that are the base of any narrator you could wish for!

So, story is top notch, author is practically a genius by the way he told the story and the narrator is liquid heroin to the ears with added ecstasy - why wouldn’t anyone NOT want to hear this?????

I think it should be encouraged reading for anyone, especially those with a selfish bone who could do with seeing that doing something for someone else often benefits yourself more in the long run!

Wow! Just wow!

If you are at all interested in the intracasies of how seemingly impossible to solve murder cases are solved, then this is for you.
It delves deep into the hows and whys of Necrosearch International, and takes you through step-by-step some of the cases they helped to bring closure to.

Fascinating

This book, though a little long winded in parts, is of interest to anyone following the development of forensic science in the pursuit of criminals in this modern age. It documents the story of a group of dedicated scientists who came together to search for long hidden bodies and the prosecution of their murderers who thought they had got away with their crime.
Well written and well read.

Interesting

Tells the story of NecroSearch International from inception through cases they have been involved in. Has a chapter for each individual found and the role NI played in finding them. So interesting and well read finished in two sittings. Will listen to motor by the author.

The way this book is written keeps you intrigued and interested in not only the stories but the progression of the pig people. I thought it might be hard to follow when getting into the nitty gritty scientific bits but it was truly fascinating and enjoyable. I had already heard about several of the murders included in this book but listening to what in-depth detail and determination went into the recovery of the bodies is something that is mostly glossed over in news articles, so this made the book even better for me.

Really Interesting

This is the best Police procedural book I've listened to.
It documents a number of crimes and how they were solved.
I received a free copy of this audio book at my own request and voluntarily leave this honest review. .

5 Star all the way

This book gives a wonderful personal perspective on the developments that helped make forensic science an indispensable tool for Police Forces searching for murder victims.
We are introduced to ‘The Pig People’, a motivated and professional group of volunteers who have decided to share their knowledge and expertise in a variety of disciplines, to assist the Police in bringing justice and closure to victims and their families through the application of science.
Case studies demonstrate the dedication, professionalism and drive demonstrated by all the parties involved in the extensive preparation, search and hopefully, successful recovery of a victim’s body.

A ‘must read’ for those interested in Forensic Science
