About this listen

Return to the world of the Farseers…

Robin Hobb’s best loved characters, Fitz , The Fool and Nighteyes the wolf, face new adventures and trials in the first book of The Tawny Man trilogy.

When Assassin’s Quest closed, Fitz was living in self-imposed exile. Wracked with pain, he had chosen to discard the magical gifts that had seen him survive the wonders and torments of navigating the legendary city of the Elderlings, and of raising a dragon.

Now, in this the first of a new trilogy, we are returned to the world of the Six Duchies and the lives of those who managed to survive the events of the first Assassin trilogy.

Fifteen years have passed and events are about to sweep Fitz out of his quiet backwater life and into the main political current again. Persecution of the Witted has become rampant throughout the Six Duchies despite Queen Kettricken’s effort to damp it. The Witted themselves have begun to strike back. So when 15 year old Prince Dutiful disappears, is it only because he is nervous about his betrothal ceremony to an Outislander princess, or has he been taken hostage by the Witted? Worse, is he perhaps another ‘Piebald Prince’, a Farseer tainted by Wit magic? As the desperate situation worsens, Kettricken has no choice but to summon Fitz to Buckkeep, for who better to track the young prince down than another gifted with the Wit, together with his bonded companion, the wolf Nighteyes?

Critic reviews

"Hobb is one of the great modern fantasy writers… what makes her novels as addictive as morphine is not just their imaginative brilliance but the way her characters are compromised and manipulated by politics." (The Times)

"A gleaming debut" (Publishers Weekly)

The material from Robin Hobb is simply spellbinding, rich and incredible. I haven’t wept at a book (and certainly not an audiobook!) since I was in my teens. There was a section in the last book that really broke me. Just beautiful, deep writing.

I’m also chuffed that now they found a quality narrator to match. The faux posh English accent from the Canadian previous reader really wound me up. Nick Taylor has a lovely cadence to his voice with a beautiful sense of pace and a nice array of accents.

I do wish they could agree on pronunciations though... I’m sure by the time I read the final set of books the Queen and Burrich will have a third way of saying their names!

So much better than the last narrator!

Any additional comments?

I'm not sure if this trilogy is a better than the first trilogy (The Farseer Trilogy), as in my opinion the first one was poorly narrated. Nick Taylor does an exceptional job at narrating this book and the rest of the Tawny Man Trilogy. It was difficult to stop listening and I would find myself taking a longer path to get where I was going just to listen to a bit more.

Great Story, Great Narration

Needs more space between end of chapter and title of next as it can be jolting and ruin a moment! Few mistakes missed too! Otherwise enjoyed the narration

very subversive. You have to keep on listening. Robin Hobb has to be one of my favourite authors

Please don't let the change of Narrator put you off! I was only prompted to write this review when I saw how many listeners were complaining about the change in Narrator for this second Trilogy. I can only say I can't imagine how I could have struggled through another three books with the last horrendous narrator, with his forced plummy accent, weird pronunciations and strange expression. New guy is awesome in comparison!

Fantastic book, GREAT narration!

I’m listening to all the of her books in order and this is the best yet. Very much enjoyed this being shorter than the books from the mad ship trilogy.

Best one yet.

the narration was excellent, my only criticism is the lack of a pause at the end of a chapter, I'm sure a little editing could fix this. I'm totally invested in this whole world, and am just about to check online for a map to confirm my imaginings of the geography. I love many of the characters, and although they sometimes seem a little slow to realise some obvious developments, there are many unexpected plot twists to keep me guessing. I wish I could write like this!

fabulous!

the abruptness of a new chapter kept making me jump....leave a little time between, me thinks.

I adore this book and was very excited to listen to it told. The story is as excellent, as I recalled from reading the story myself, but this is slightly affected by very poor editing that includes repitition and errors. Still enjoyable to listen to, as it is read well (bar mispronuncitation of Kettricken's name) but frustrating that the presentation is so poor.

Excellent story poorly edited

Abrupt chapter changes and background noise in the recording. Narrator is actually great, book is great if heartbreaking.

Bad editing
