Summary

The war may be over, but so long as English magic controls the Highlands, not even a dragon laird can keep his clan safe. What Cathal MacAlasdair needs is a warrior fierce enough to risk everything, yet gifted enough to outwit an enemy more monster than man.

What he needs is Sophia.

Alchemist Sophia Metzger traveled to Loch Arach in search of knowledge. She never dreamed she'd learn to do battle, ride through the stars on the back of a dragon, or catch the eye of a Highland laird. But as her quest turns to sizzling chemistry and inescapable danger, she'll soon discover the thrill of being caught in a dragon's claws.

It took a while for me to get into the book

This is a slow burner. It took a while for me to get in to the book and if the narrator wasn't so good I may have stopped. The story was a little too slow paced for my liking but I am glad that I continued. Once I was dragged into the story it held my attention. This book read more like a historical drama (not my genre) with a bit of dragon and alchemy thrown in.
Both the main characters were strong and showed a lot of maturity and stayed true to their nature till the end, which was a refreshing change from most books in paranormal genre. Often times MFC start strong and snarky, even unnecessarily rude and as story progresses become weak, dependent and take stupid decisions which thankfully wasn't present in this story. The author didn't have to use some stupid action on part of the characters to further the story.
All in all I enjoyed this book.

Surprisingly good

I’m so glad I decided to listen to this book. This is a not genre I’d normally chose, with dragons and magic etc. But I was hooked straight away.

The two main characters were interesting. A strong female role model, and a man who allowed her to shine.

It was very emotive, and I had a few tears at certain tense points in the book.

My lesson is, to take a risk, listen to another genre I wouldn’t normally consider, and see what happens.

Such a pleasant surprise

The free books in this genre that I’ve read lately were not great, but I absolutely loved this book, such a refreshing change!

World building and attention to detail was fab, the characters believable, and the story really well written

The narrator was a pleasure to listen to, I enjoyed the way he voiced the different characters

Onto the next book!!
