About this listen

Shortlisted for the CWA Dagger in the Library

Ruth Galloway receives a phone call that bears shocking news. A friend of hers from college, Dan Golding, has been killed in a fire at his Lancashire home. Her shock turns to alarm when she gets a letter from Dan. He has made a discovery that will change archaeology forever but he needs Ruth's advice. Even more alarming, he sounds vulnerable and frightened. DCI Harry Nelson is also rediscovering his past. Up north for a holiday, he meets his former colleague Sandy MacLeod, now at Blackpool CID. Sandy tells him there are strange circumstances surrounding Dan Golding's death. Many of those who worked with Dan seem to be afraid.

Many have secrets to hide. Ruth is drawn deep into the mystery, and where she goes, so does her toddler daughter, Kate. This time, it's not just Ruth's life at risk.

Change of accent

One of the main characters has been changed from an Irish accent to posh English and it really bothered me.

Eloy Griffith’s - Dying Fall

Another excellent book from Ely Griffiths! Have to say the narrator WAS NOT excellent! Her take on male voices and children’s voices was to put bit mildly, bizarre!

Terrible narrator change

This story is one of the best in the series so far but it is unfortunately ruined by a terrible change in narrator. It’s annoying enough to get over the voice of Ruth changing but the accents/voices given to the surrounding characters are horrendous. A real shame as it rather spoils a series I had been really enjoying.

Very enjoyable series

Would you consider the audio edition of Dying Fall to be better than the print version?

I have read some of the others in the series but this is the first I have heard. On balance I think that I preferred to listen than to read in this case.

Any additional comments?

I particularly enjoyed it as I knew some of the places mentioned, the Lancashire moors and Blackpool. I knit whilst I listen and this was a nice book for that, not too complicated to keep track of the characters and plot but interesting. certain parts were exciting enough to make me knit faster!

Enjoyable listen

I am a fan of the Ruth Galloway series, and really enjoy the main characters as their lives become more entwined. However although the narrator is the same as previously, she seems to have endowed Cathbad with a curiously posh accent, which is why I only gave a 3 star rating for performance.

Poor narrator.

Narrator dreadful. I've looked at this book a few times before but after listening to sample have dismissed it outright. It's a pity because I've listened to almost all of the other books in this series. Persuaded to buy by Daily Deal but still hate the narrator.

Terrible accents

The voice the narrator put on for thr Northern men made them sound stupid and detracted from the story.

Full of physic twaddle

I have listened to a few of series now and this was definitely the worst. I like them for the wider story of Ruth and Nelson, not for the detective storyline and it's just as well. I have never known anyone to have as many near death experiences as Ruth unless you count the unlucky residents of Midsomer. But this one did hack me of with constant references to physic connections and other unbelievable rubbish.

Dying Fall

The story was good but the voices for the different characters were too overdone. The child’s voice was particularly loud and grating. Not one of the best books I have read.
