Summary

In the North African desert in 1941 the war is being won by the brilliant German commander General Rommel, and the British are in retreat on all fronts.
A young British army lieutenant, David Stirling, believes that the only way to reverse this situation is to attack the enemy behind their own lines, using small groups of men who can insert by land, sea or air as required. The first of these men are dropped by parachute to attack enemy airfields in the Gazala area, but the raid is a disaster, with many lives lost.
The following year, the survivors of that operation, now working hand in hand with the Long Range Desert Group, mount a series of spectacular raids in heavily armed jeeps against airfields in the Benghazi region, destroying nearly a hundred enemy aircraft, leaving the German army reeling, and reversing the course of the war.
Desert Raiders is the colourful story of the birth of the SAS, the most renowned regiment in the history of the British Army – forged with fire and steel in the vast, sun-scorched plains of the North African desert, pitting themselves against the might of the formerly invincible German army, and gaining a reputation that will make them a legend in their own time.

Absolutely superb.

The historical accuracy and the fascinating endurance and skill solders in the SAS must demonstrate.

This book was absolutely fascinating. David Sterling; the founder of the special air service, was an courageous and fascinating character that is easy to like in this portrayal of him. I was hanging on the edge of every word spoken in this incredibly entertaining book. I haven't enjoyed or been fascinated by a story as much as I have here in a long time.
I was fascinated; educated, entertained and enthralled by the storyline and enjoyed the narrator's dialogue throughout. Although he's no Paul Thornley, Sean Barrett did a sterling job (pun intended) with a brilliant rendition of Clarke's depiction of courage, survival and brutality that is demonstrated by our boys in the special air service.
Buy this book today. I am loving the 'SAS operation' audio series and this was the best yet. On to the next one!

Mindblowing
I am staggered at how completely formed the SAS Regiment at the original inception. All the original soldiers were every bit (if not more) competent and well trained in all the things the SAS became famous for in the public eye over 40 yrs later! These were no 'stiff upper lip' typical british forces. The range of skills ranging from multiple weapon platforms, basic survival, combat, specialist skills and everything is just the same as it is for a modern SAS soldier... in someways it sounds as if these guys were pushed harder because the boundaries were unknown. It sounds so implausible and weird because the public only became aware of the SAS in the 80s so their methods seem so non-WW2 because they are so far ahead of their time. There is a saying in sport that you can't compare athletes from a different era... bizzarely in this case you can... in any era these guys were absolute bloody legends!
