About this listen

The first book of an epic progression fantasy series inspired by Scandinavian folklore, The Witcher, and Dungeons & Dragons, where a young man named Hallik has been training his whole life to become a magic-wielder, or Grimnir, to keep his island safe. But when monsters breach the shield protecting his realm, Hallik must venture into the mystical cave of Vanalf to hone his skills to protect everything he holds dear.

Hallik has been training his whole life to become a Grimnir, a magic-wielder who can aid in keeping their island safe from the monster hordes outside the shield protecting them. Hundreds of years ago, Grimnirs created a shield around their island. Hallik has waited his whole life to become one of the elite Grimnir who can keep their enemies at bay.

But when monsters start showing up on the island, it appears they aren’t as safe as they thought. They’ll need more Grimnirs to ensure their safety, but to become a magic-wielder, they’ll need to traverse the depths of Vanalf, a cave system that connects the realms, making it the most dangerous place imaginable. Fortunately, there’s one ragtag crew that’s up to the task.

An epic progression fantasy inspired by Scandinavian folklore, The Witcher, and Dungeons & Dragons, The Depths of Vanalf is the first in an epic series that will leave you spellbound.

Fun, quick story but characters and writing are not fully developed which makes pacing and stakes a bit difficult sometimes.

Fun for young adults

Had high hopes for this after seeing some booktoks summarising it but so far it's kinda awful?

the premise is interesting enough but some of the performers in this are seriously lacking, their cadence is distracting and they seem to emphasize words at random killing any kinda narrative flow.

one in particular seems to have a constant raspy breathlessness that I really don't vibe with.

the writing qualify seems iffy but I'm unable to gauge whether this is just because of the performance or not

Interesting setting spoiled by patchy performance

Honestly, the most annoying thing with this story is all the different voice actors and changes in POVs. Going into this book I assumed there would be a single mc, but there is clearly more because every chapter changes POV. This seems like a mistake because it prevents me from truly bonding with any of the characters. I would really like to listen to the story, I just don’t care about the characters due to this and so I DNF. Sorry…

Its a book
