About this listen

An aggressive debt collector banished from the kingdom. Now his life depends on his ability to help the less fortunate....

Vireo Reinhold relishes collecting his monarch’s proper dues. Working hard to prolong and fund the king’s never-ending war, the self-centered official revels in the perks of luxury that come with his unorthodox role. But his world upends when he unearths an ancient spellbook that promises to unlock a shadowy, forgotten magic. Embroiled in a secret affair with a fellow noble’s wife, Vireo is mortified when he’s forced to commit an unthinkable act. Driven into exile, no longer able to coerce the vulnerable, and with the powerful tome in his enemy’s hands, the fallen agent’s only shot at survival hangs on his skills at saving others.

Can Vireo redeem himself as the people’s champion before they all fall to a sinister fate?

A good play on an old tale brings together a new world with many avenues

A really good book

Very well read, good story, only bad thing is that it wasn't long enough, would have loved for it to go on more details and expanded. But I really enjoyed it

Different, but I liked it.

A.P Beswick created an amazing piece of literature, which I can get lost in the story and fantasy he created. Loved the story and can’t wait to start the second book

Fantasy masterpiece

I was engaged and enjoying, however it feels like the ending was for me unsatisfactor.. could be longer by 2 or 3 times. The world-building is good, and the plot pacey

Feels like an intro

A darker, more thought about storyline for a classic story that takes your imagination on a journey through mystic and gruesome times

Great twist on a classic

This could have been an epic book but key scenes feel so rushed, your not really drawn into the feeling and atmosphere of the event but rather just told about it. the ending being a perfect example, should have been atleast 2-3 times as long, and looking at the duration of the next books, this looks to continue... don't think I'll be buying book 2 unless I am really stuck for something

fantastic plot, just very rushed

Fabulous story

First I want to say I really enjoyed Aaron Smith's narration in this. His character work is fantastic, and you can usually understand who is talking before the writing even confirms it.

Next the writing... Now don't get me wrong, I enjoyed the plot and characters...but that is all there really was. The style of writing just seemed to be a play-by-play of the necessary information that was required to push the plot forward. Only characters of note exist in this world as if they aren't integral to the plot the rest of the world just consists of nameless extras. I also felt this super focus on the plot made the pacing feel a little rushed in places (especially during slight time jumps), this unfortunately made certain plot points fall a bit flat as there wasn't much build-up.

All in all, I enjoyed it, due to the great concept (it's a retelling of Robin Hood after all), and the characters and plot were good, but I felt it fell short in its worldbuilding and execution. Once again, the reading was fantastic, and the character work cannot be praised enough. I might listen to the sequel if it goes on sale, but if it has similar issues I will probably fall off this series, which is a shame as conceptually I would love to see how the story develops.

Well read, but the writing for me felt rushed
