As I said of the previous one, this is (more) enjoyable tosh. A pretty silly story, albeit brought to a satisfying conclusion and the contrast between the Hamish of the books and the Hamish of the TV is intriguing. And David Monteath’s narration brings it all a class it would not otherwise have. Looking forward to the next one…this is turning into a binge!

Was feeling a bit bereft having finished all the Agatha Raisin books and then along comes Hamish. A bit of enjoyable storytelling- loving it.

Made me chuckle as some scenes were very descriptive and humorous. Well worth a listen

The beginning of the Hamish and his impossible romances (very much like Agatha Raisin). He might be a good policeman, but a disastrous lover. The story has lots of suspects; so made it interesting trying to workout the killer. The author reported crime, so must have dealt many time with the police. She does portrait the "misogynists" attitude in the police force. That and other abuses are only now being slowly recognised and dealt with. So though while listening to their behaviour, it makes you wonder if policing was down to luck. Their is so much jealous, infighting and nastiness. What type of person wants to work in such a poisoned environment.

I usually love MC Beaton books, the descriptions of the locations and the humourous characters. I often listen to them when going to sleep. This one was far too violent and unpleasant though, and actually stopped me sleeping - the opposite of the reason I bought it!

MC Beaton books are a guilty pleasure; with the characters as well as the author stuck with 19th-century values and prejudices, it can be painful to read about such passive, stifled and outright caddish females, but the bitter pill is sugar-coated with the amusing but dedicated and thoughtful lead character Hamish Macbeth and the occasional lyrical description of northern coastal Scotland. The whodunnit parts are well-done although wrapped up a bit too swiftly, but this is rectified in some of the author's later works. The narrator adds another 1/2 star with a beautiful voice and versatility with British dialects.

Warning: Hamish Macbeth books are addictive! 3.5/5
