About this listen

The first volume of the official novelization of the best-selling and award-winning video game Death Stranding, created by legendary game creator Hideo Kojima

Mysterious explosions have rocked the planet, setting off a series of supernatural phenomena known as the Death Stranding. Spectral creatures that devour the living have pushed humanity to the brink of extinction, causing countries to fall and survivors to scatter and live in pockets of isolation.

Sam Porter Bridges, the legendary porter with the ability to return from the world of the dead, has been entrusted with a critical mission by the President of the United Cities of America. He must journey across this ravaged landscape crawling with otherworldly threats to reconnect cities and people and rebuild America one step at a time.

Great book. Now on to the second one. The audiobook speeds up the slower aspects of the game and keeps the interest to the narrative.

A deeper look into the world of death stranding

You have to get use to the voice of lector. This book is more focused on the story from the game. So it doesn’t contains lone man and journey vibe like game but it makes me feel better understanding the lore and story. It makes your connection even better :). If you loved the game you should hear this book. I do recommend putting game soundtrack in the background.

Bringing back memories

For those that have played the game (or seen any of the trailers), it becomes immediately obvious that the narrator - or the narrative director - had never heard any of the original voices, and didn't do much effort to find out what the characters should sound like.

The result is a very faithful novelization which is spoiled by its narration. Oftentimes the intonation is completely different which changes the way characters are perceived. The characters all sound really bland and slooooow, with only a change in pitch to differentiate them. A character like Higgs is supposed to sound witty, but instead he's portrayed with a stereotypical deep menacing voice, which doesn't fit the author's intent at all, and all other characters are similarly misrepresented to different degrees.

I was sceptical about a novelisation of a game where all you essentially do is walk around carrying stuff to from one place to another. But like the game, such descriptions are diminutive. If you've played Death Stranding (which is a masterpiece) you'll know that it is packed with lore, a lot of which is explained and alluded to often fairly quickly. So when I picked the game back up after a year in order to achieve the platinum, it was great to listen to the audiobook at the same time, not only to reacquaint myself but also to delve deeper into the backstory, which this book provides in abundance.
I'm a bit frustrated that this book is split into two parts though: Seems like a rip off. The narrator does a serviceable job but I wasn't keen on how he voices Deadman in this weird singysongy voice

great if you're a fan of the game

I was really excited when I heard there was a novelisaton of Death Stranding, even more so when it got the audible treatment. I loved the world and experiencing more of Kojima's amazing style.

As loopy and strange as the game was it has been translated well to written form. It manages to capture the feeling of isolation from Sam's perspective but breaks things up by having short sections detailed from the POV of shelter occupants which I think does a good job of fleshing them out for the reader, especially ones who have not played the game.

The narrator does a good job overall and his range of voices is good and consistent though some may sound a little out of place compared to the actors they had in the game, that's understandable.

If you are a fan of the game then this is a must. The TPB versions also look awesome and will make a fine addition to anyone's bookshelf. For readers who have not played the game there is a lot to enjoy in this story though i feel some of the experience may be lost by not being able to witness the striking visuals of the world Sam is exploring.

Keep on keeping on

It’s a great listen, a nice way of revisiting this story without the 100+ replaying the game. Thanks Kojima, for all the great (very crazy) stories.

For fans of the game!

I'm sure it's a great story if you're a fan if the game, as per other reviews. if you’re like me and just wanted a good story, then this doesn't work as a stand alone piece of entertainment.

You Need to have played the game

I don't want to sound harsh or sound disrespectful to Bronson Pinchot, but it crazy how he has made just one thing completely ruin the experience for me. I really wanted to enjoy this. I love the game and couldn't wait for the book and the audio book, so this hard to give a bad review.

Bronson Pinchot, was doing a fantastic job, but as soon as he introduced Deadman it went down hill fast. He gave Deadman a slow, low, dull, lifeless and monotonous voice. Deadman is a pivotal character in the game and so he comes in to play a lot. It becomes long and drawn out every time he is voice acting the characters, his dialogue becomes painful to listen to soon after hearing it. The audiobook runs for just over eight hours, but could genuinely run for six hours if he didn't read Deadman's dialogue so slow.

Deadman, stops it dead.
