Summary
'Gripping and grisly, with plenty of twists and turns that race along with black humour.' Craig Robertson
St. Andrews, Scotland: When a man's preserved body is discovered in a whisky ageing cask in the local Gleneden Distillery, DCI Andy Gilchrist and his partner, DS Jessie Janes, are assigned to the investigation. But when the dead man is identified as Hector Dunmore, the once heir-apparent of Gleneden Distillery, their investigation takes a dramatic turn, for Dunmore was reported missing 25 years earlier when his Land Rover was found abandoned on the outskirts of Mallaig, almost two hundred miles away on the Scottish west coast.
Why hide a body in a 25-year ageing cask? And who would want Dunmore dead?
Suspicion falls on Duncan Milne, the distillery manager at the time, but when Gilchrist learns that Milne died under suspicious circumstances the year Dunmore disappeared, he suspects they are looking at a double murderer. Gilchrist's efforts to resolve the murders forces him to dig deep into the Dunmore family's past, only to come up against a frightening killer who will stop at nothing to keep the darkest of family secrets from ever coming to light.

Not the last one surely.
Story line always intriguing, characters brought to life and with a life beyond the plot. Narration excellent and clear.
Hope the endings not the end.

Intriguing!
Kept me guessing right until the end. Just when I thought I'd worked it all out, something changed. A well written plot, full of twists, brought to life by exceptional narration. Enjoyed every minute and would definitely recommend!

Lots of twists.
I enjoyed this book. I kept thinking I knew the answers but was wrong at every twist and turn. Looking forward to listening to more of this series. I liked the narration too. Quite pleasant and not too grating on the ears as some do spoiling the story for you.

Another puzzle solved with panache
This series is wonderful to listen to. There are plenty of twists in the plot to keep you guessing, and a sting in the tail at the end. Very well written, with great characters, and brilliantly narrated.

Love this series
I’ve listened to all the audiobooks in this series so far and must admit that it took some perseverance for me with the first couple. Once you get past the unrealistic and sometimes ridiculous emotions attached to trauma and Gilcrests relationships with his children in the first two books this series settles down into a thoroughly enjoyable listen.
I would recommend to anyone who likes a good (and sometimes gory) old fashioned detective story. The characters are likeable, the stories get better and better and the narration is great!
The line “and there he had it” makes me smile every time.

the narrator brings the book to life
David Monteath is on the top of my list of narrators along with Gareth Armstrong's Maigret. As soon as I hear their voices I settle down and am off and away into the book. I think they could transform utter rubbish into a top seller. The book was Ok.

Another great listen
He's up against it again. This book took me through the case and life and as always didn't disappoint. Great narration and plot. That ending though! Is that it? I don't want it to be.........

Really enjoyable
Currently one of my favourite authors and narrators. When the body of man found in 25 year old cask of whiskey, D I Gilchrist comes meets the owner of the distillery and the sister of the man in the cask. When she shows no surprise that her brother was found in the cask, Gilchrist wonders if she is in shock or does she know more then she let's on.

Tower T
Another great novel by T. F. Muir. A great story, lots of twists and turns and ably narrated by David Monteath. It is also good that the writer has answers to the plethora of American novels - very refreshing!
I have listened to most of this series and have already ordered the next. If you want a good British (Scottish) crime thriller, look no further. I would recommend going back to the first, even though each novel stands alone as a complete book.
