About this listen
From the best-selling author of the best-selling Psychic Surveys and This Haunted World series, comes a Christmas ghost story to chill your bones!
A renovation. In the countryside. Just over an hour's train ride from London.
An ideal family home. Sold unseen. At auction.
Married couple Al and Liz Greenaway love London, but when they discover an impressive country property for sale in need of some TLC, for the same price as their London flat, they decide to go for it. For them, life is all about reinventing themselves and keeping things fresh, and this house marks an exciting new chapter.
In the week running up to Christmas, it is Liz who finds herself at Carfax House, alone. Al's held up with work. No matter, there's plenty to occupy her before he arrives, getting it ready for the festive season. A fine house. Once. Solitary, romantic, isolated, and quiet. So quiet that, for the first time in years, Liz can hear her own thoughts as long buried memories emerge. And there's an echo in them, a whisper...
For someone else in the house, memories are emerging too.

Very difficult themes
I’m not sure if this comes with a warning but near the end it has a topic some would find distressing. I found it hard myself but I felt the author did well. This is the first I’ve listened to this narrator and I ended up speeding her up. I found her a little childish sounding, but her other voices were very good.

Atmospheric and beautiful descriptions.
I enjoyed this book. It's not a fright a minute but it's very immersive and you start to easily feel in the main character's shoes. Trigger Warning: It does have themes around mental health and suicide but it is sensitively and compassionately handled by the author . Despite it being somewhat bleak in parts, it was an atmospheric Christmas read.

Short listen book and goes nowhere
I love to listen to narrator Penny Scott Andrews which helped a lot as this book was so boring and goes nowhere. All the hype you lead up to leads to nothing . It could have been so much better.

oh dear
this has to be one of the hardest reviews I've ever left and considered not leaving one at all as usually I love Shani. but, I'm sure she would appreciate an honast review of this shory.
to start, the narrator. I commented about her on Mandy. I'm dreadfully sorry but its almost unbearable! she sounds like she is pretending to be a seven year old child! i literally had to force myself through it! like Mandy, it was so so hard! why oh why does she narrate like a small child? please Shani choose a different narrator, I'm already in 2 minds wether to listen to the next book which is the sequal to mandy. I loved that story but could not bear the little girl voice reading it! it completely spoilt it for me and I know I'm not alone as have read other reviews about the tweeny voice reading a 'horror story'.
that takes me to the story.
The story is beautifully written and if you are a fan of the classics like Bronte' and Austin then you will probably love it. I however do not like the classics and only read (listen) to horror, supernatural and scary stories. This was most definitely not a Christmas ghost story but more than the whimsical memories of a troubled mind. I was very fortunate to receive this audio version free of charge but even then, I feel like I have just wasted a few hours of my life waiting for what I assumed to be a paranormal Christmas tale. I would definitely have asked for a refund had I used a credit on it.
I love Shani and most of her books which deal in hauntings etc and thats why I like her, this however read like the musings of a woman with childhood trauma, not paranormal at all and definitely not the kind of book I would choose to listen to. the trouble is now I'm left in 2 minds wether to read any future books incase they are like this. LOVE YOU SHANI BUT PLEASE make it more clear if we are getting a fictional drama type or a paranormal story, this way I'm sure you will avoid having negative feedback. x
