About this listen

Here is the gorgeous and sinister story of Marius, patrician by birth, scholar by choice, one of the oldest vampires of them all, which sweeps from his genesis in ancient Rome, in the time of Emperor Augustus, to his meeting in the present day with a creature of snow and ice.

Thorne is a Northern vampire in search of Maharet, his maker, the ancient Egyptian vampire queen who holds him and others in thrall with chains made of her red hair, 'bound with steel and with her blood and gold'. When the Visigoths sack his city, Marius is there; with the resurgence of the glory that was Rome, he is there, still searching for his lost love, Pandora, but bewitched in turn by Botticelli; the Renaissance beauty Bianca, with her sordid secrets; and the boy he calls Amadeo (otherwise known as the Vampire Armand).

Crisscrossing through the stories of other vampires from Rice's glorious pantheon of the undead, haunted by Pandora and by his alter ego, Mael, tracked by the Talamasca, the tale of Marius, the self-styled guardian of those who must be kept is the most wondrous and mind-blowing of them all.

Beautifully crafted and well worth the time, however slightly let down by the prologue-epilogue story

A captivating history of the powerful "Old ones"

I can’t say I disliked a thing about this book, story, characters nor narration. The end had me pondering Thorne’s motives but I think I know why it ended the way he chose.

I read the Lestat trilogy many years ago and will read them again now but listening to Marius tell his story and being reminded of old names like Pandora, Maharet, etc was like - to say coming home sounds cheesy and overly sentimental - but I did enjoy a warm wave of nostalgia remembering these characters.

Blood and Gold had me thoroughly engrossed even through the descriptions of the great cities like Rome and its history, the painters of the time and all of Marius’ musings. Lovely, vivid details.

And Marius, the great infallible yet fallible Marius. I enjoyed the telling of his life story very much.

Excellently narrated

Great story of the vampire chronicles. Read well. Even though I read the book many years ago I very much enjoyed this audiobook.

Anne Rice never disappoints

Another Brilliant Book by Anne Rice

Blood and Gold is a treasure trove of The history of the Wise Roman Vampire Marius, we join him through the centuries with other powerful blood drinkers such as Mael the Druid priest and his gentle maker Avicus a former god of the grove and all I can say is I've read this brilliant novel and listened to it and I still enjoy it as though seeing an old friend a whooping 10/10 well done to the narrator for bringing Marius's voice to life 🥇

I loved the Characters, so much so I actually missed them

The narrator has the most beautiful soothing voice which was perfect for this book, and the stories are so engaging and interesting. Anne Rice is such a gifted story teller and this is one of her best…

This was pretty good considering I didn't really like Marius in the previous books. I really liked Pandora and Bianca, and again I felt sorry for poor Amadeo (Armand). The narrator was also very good in this one.

This was good
