About this listen
The mesmerising retelling from the woman at the heart of one of Ancient Greece's most famous myths.
Ariadne, Princess of Crete and daughter of the fearsome King Minos, grows up hearing stories of gods and heroes. But beneath the golden palace something else stirs, the hoofbeats and bellows echoing from the Labyrinth below. Every year its captive, the Minotaur—Ariadne's brother—demands blood.
When Theseus, Prince of Athens, arrives as a sacrifice to the beast, Ariadne sees in him her chance to escape. But helping Theseus kill the monster means betraying her family and country, and Ariadne knows only too well that drawing the attention of the mercurial gods may cost her everything.
In a world where women are nothing more than the pawns of powerful men, will Ariadne's decision to risk everything for love ensure her happy ending? Or will she find herself sacrificed for her lover's ambition?
Ariadne gives a voice to the forgotten women of one of the most famous Greek myths. Beautifully written and completely immersive, this exceptional debut novel is perfect for fans of Circe, A Song of Achilles, and The Silence of The Girls.

A mixed bag
The overall story was good and many chapters were interesting and engaging. However, there were also lots of chapters that were painfully slow and it seemed to take a thousand words to describe a pretty straightforward event and took so long to get where I knew it was going. The narration was good but the constant intense dramatic tone was a bit wearing.

Saved by a great story and good performance
Don't think I would have finished this book if I had been reading it as the writing is unimaginative and simplistic. By no means a literary masterpiece, this book is held together by simply being a great story, performed admirably by Kristin Atherton.

Such a gut wrenchingly sad story. Written and performed with such beauty and tenderness. Outstanding

An amazing debut novel
I really enjoyed this story. It is beaufully written and very well narrated. I was completely engaged from the very beginning would definitely recommend. I didn't really know anything about Greek Mythology before starting this book, but it really brought the characters to life, and has left me wanting to know more.

Loving this trend in genre. Re telling of the classics with her-stories.
But oh what a shame they were weak characters.

LOVED this novel and an impeccable performance
I recently listened to another book with one narrater voicing two characters (the children of jocasta) and the two characters were so hard to decipher.
This was in no way the case with this novel. I actually had to check there weren't two narrators.
The story develops and changes over and over. By the end I'd forgotten the Minotaur and Labrynth even existed! Thoroughly entertaining listen which truly takes you on a journey with the characters. Both clever story telling and wonderful narration bring this story to life.
Will definitely listen to this book again.

Good but not as good as Circe
This is a great book, a powerful story based on Greek mythology. It is very much focused on the women of the time and their suffering at the hands of men and Gods. Whilst I enjoyed it, I had not long ago read Circe by Madeline Miller and couldn't help feel like I was reading the same book with a different title. It felt incredibly similar, but that may be just my view. I'd still recommend it.

Beautiful
Loved this beautiful story of a lesser known part of Greek myth and brilliantly told.
The voice acting is excellent and really adds to the story.
