Summary

Never trust anyone. Never trust yourself.

Rachel has made poor decisions in the past, but she has always tried her best for her daughter. When Vivian needed a fresh start, Rachel didn't hesitate to move them far from London. She just wishes she could shake the nagging doubt that Vivian is hiding something.

Vivian isn't like other teenagers. On the surface she seems the same as her friends, but she knows she is different. When enigmatic Alex takes an interest in her, Vivian's cool demeanour hides an intensity of feeling she has never known before. His touch sets her skin on fire.

Mother and daughter are both keeping secrets. But just how dangerous are they? As lust and anger give way to violence Rachel will have to decide: is she prepared to give up everything for her child? Even her own life?

A taut and gripping psychological thriller about toxic families, secrets and life-or-death decisions. Don't miss this if you're a fan of He Said/She Said, Good Me, Bad Me and The Girlfriend.

Thoroughly enjoyed this book

I really liked the suspense in the book and found the characters believable. I really did not like the daughters character and I think this was intentional. Well written, good pace and not too heavy

Enjoyable Listen

Really enjoyed this book. Found the main character Vivian quite funny at times, although I sort of guessed how it was going to pan out.

Kept me listening though, worth a credit

An enjoyable listen

I enjoyed listening to this during a long journey. nothing earth shattering but I enjoyed how toxic and flawed the characters are.

simple book, amazing performance

Book is OK. The narrator is amazing, the characters come alive. This was probably the only reason I have finished it.

Beautifully written and gripping

I’d probably give 4.5 stars if I could- half a star off just as I found some parts of the story weren’t explained at the end (why did Alex feel the need (and seem to very much enjoy) to sleep with both of them for example..
kept me listening though so was gripping and I adore the writers style so will try some other of her books :)

Don't look for an easy listen

Not sure just how to review this novel because much of it is unpleasant listening. Mother and daughter relationships can be difficult but this one is toxic. Something dreadful happened in the early years and they now live in a quiet village where mother draws illustrations (successfully) whilst her daughter succumbs to the darkest thoughts of a tortured mind. How the mother blinds herself to this takes some believing but in real life, this happens to many. Mental instability is never pleasant and the daughters descent into a hell of her own making is brilliantly described, so much so that, despite reservations, I had to see it through to the harrowing finale. Doubt that I have the stomach to read again so will return but not because it is a bad book - it isn't- but because it will possibly stay with me a while longer than most.

Not Convinced

At a basic level this novel met my the requirements of domestic thriller. There are deaths, twists, a police presence and one or two nefarious characters who deserve some comeuppance. Yet the basic ingredients of the genre failed to materialise. For a start, there was a lack of tension. The presence of a child psychopath is usually a helpful trope for delivering the tension one comes to expect from the genre, however there has to be something about a character that attracts empathy. Take ‘Kevin in We Need to Talk about Kevin’ (Lionel Shriver). Kevin is hateful but his mum’s failings make us empathise somewhat and understand. Vivian had a violent dad and, as a result, an emotionally distant mum. But these contexts weren’t explored enough in the book to make Vivian convincing. Good performance, though. Because of the actresses range of intonations it was easy to differentiate between characters and I didn’t get lost.
