Summary

Eight years ago, the December Plague swept through the human population of Earth. The infected were driven mad by the disease, becoming violent and cannibalistic, killing even those closest to them without hesitation.

Six years ago, the tiny surviving community of immune humans found a cure, and the infected began to wake up and realize what they'd done...and what had been done to them.

Over time, society began to rebuild itself. Now, it is ready to judge those responsible for the Plague. Nella Rider, the court psychologist, and Frank Courtlen, a defense attorney, are trying to establish the truth. But more depends on it than they know. They race to find the answers they need before the fragile remains of humanity vanish for good.

"The damp snap, snap, snap of the carrot"

The story follows the search for the truth behind the history of who started the pandemic which devastated the world's population. Two of the original medical researchers are being held in prison awaiting trial, but were they really the guilty ones? As more is uncovered by the court appointed psychiatrist, Nella, and the defence lawyer, Frank, they are launched into a race to determine what has really been happening.
This is a thriller unlike other zombie apocalypse stories in that the horror is at least theoretically mostly in the recent past. A cure had been found, and now people are having to come to terms and live on, not only with each other but with themselves. And it is not easy as memories surface of the hideous past happenings in their lives. Nella and Frank have their own demons to face - will their tentative new relationship survive them? And can they, together, unravel the mystery which seems to threaten humanity again?
Well written and narrated, I can highly recommend this unusual book to all who enjoy post apocalyptic zombie stories. My only reservation, and hence the four stars, is that the growing affections between the two main protagonists sometimes felt overplayed. But it is a small criticism of this fascinating book.
And I love the cover illustration.

Good plot.

It keeps me listening, and impatient to know the end. Good plot, but too much romance for me.
