Summary

Terrible secrets never die, terrible people do

A ninety-eight-year-old landowner being found dead in his home comes as no surprise to DCI Charles Cook. But the way that Hugo Garfield died is beyond suspicious - hanging from a chandelier in his sprawling Lincolnshire country estate.

As DCI Cook and his team delve into the victim's darkand twisted past, it soon becomes clear that not only did Hugo Garfield have more than a few enemies, but the motive for his murder could lie buried deep in the past.

For Cook and his team, this is no ordinary investigation, but for those who knew Hugo Garfield, his death marks the promise of a truth that nobody can bear to hear.

Who would want to murder a dying man so brutally? How has the story remained untold for so long? And can DCI Cook and his team unravel some of the darkest secrets in local history?

From the bestselling author of the Wild Fens Murder Mysteries, A Secret To Die For is the second installment inthe DCI Cook Murder Mystery series and is perfect for fans of rural crime authors such as JM Dalgliesh, LJ Ross, Simon McCleave, Ann Cleeves, and Val McDermid.

A breathtaking murder mystery that you will never forget, inspired by a classic Dickens tale that we all know and love.

Loved the story....

I've been an Audible member for several years and have never written a review before. However, I felt I had to leave a review for this book
I absolutely loved the twists and turns of the story, but I hated the narration - sorry, but it didn't make for a good listen!

Another excellent story from Jack Cartwright.

The Transition between time periods are so smooth it’s easy to follow the storyline. I absolutely love listening to Graham Mack.

Great stories

I enjoyed the Wild Fens books greatly so wondered if these would be as good but I needn’t have worried. Great story with twists and turns and can’t wait for the next one.

1971

The historical detail of 1971 is not correct. It is more of the late 1950s and early 1960s. But, i still enjoyed the audio book.

Enjoyable and gripping

A Charles Dickens storyline with modern twists. Easy to listen to. I haven’t watched tv for a week I’ve just listened to this book

Best one yet

I’ve loved all Jack’s books but this one has just stood out. The story is incredible and the travelling through time is so smooth that you simply can’t get confused about where you are. The narration is great and when listening you just drift away into the book and forget everything else that’s going on.

Twists and turns

I’m usually good at knowing “whodunnit” in the first 30 minutes but this had me guessing for a good while longer. A great story spanning the 50 year history of a (seemingly) simple family. The narration and dramatisation made the story a joy to follow.

Amazing story with twists and turns like no other

The characters built so well. The woven story line. Really is until the end when it all produces the cloth from which a timeless suit is made. Tenderness and compassion throughout covering many delicate issues which are dealt with heart and love .

Superb story - superb narrator

Another excellent book from Jack Cartwright - with a narrator who is second to none - i would say probably Jacks best book yet - loved every second of it - as always was so sad when it came to end - am now going to listen to Jacks ‘Fens Series’ from the start (for the 3rd time round) - seriously can not wait for the next instalment in this series - bravo Jack and Graham 🥰🥰
